Chapter 3 - THE MEETING AFTER THE AFFAIR

I watched from Julian’s private office as Adrian and Celeste crossed the lobby.

They looked comfortable.

Too comfortable.

Celeste had changed out of the scarlet coat.

Her hair was loose.

Adrian’s tie was missing.

Then Claudia Vance joined them near the private lounge.

She kissed Celeste on the cheek.

That was when I realized they already knew each other well.

Very well.

Julian accessed the lounge reservation through hotel systems.

Private dinner.

Three guests.

Purpose:

MorganWell–Vale Harbor integration review.

I almost laughed.

Integration.

That was one word for it.

My phone buzzed.

Adrian.

Still working. Might stay downtown. Sleep well, sweetheart.

I stared at the message.

Then watched him raise a glass of wine beside his mistress and the woman pushing his company toward mine.

“Julian.”

“Yes?”

“Can we hear the meeting?”

He shook his head.

“No audio surveillance in private dining rooms.”

Good.

My father had standards.

But the hotel legally documented room-service and corporate billing records.

That would be enough for tonight.

Then Margaret Sloan arrived.

My father’s attorney.

Sixty-two.

Silver hair.

A voice that could make bankers confess things they hadn’t done yet.

I showed her the forged signature.

Her face turned cold.

“This is serious.”

“I know.”

“No, Elise. I mean criminally serious.”

I swallowed.

Margaret reviewed the credit authorization.

Then the metadata.

The document originated from Claudia’s office.

Edited by MorganWell’s chief financial officer.

Approved in draft by Adrian.

My stomach turned.

“My husband knew.”

Margaret nodded.

“At minimum, he saw the form containing the false signature.”

I stared through the glass at the lobby.

For eleven months, Adrian slept beside me.

For five of those months, he was sleeping with Celeste.

And somewhere during that betrayal, he became comfortable enough to participate in paperwork using my forged name.

Then Margaret opened another file.

A private email thread.

Claudia to Adrian:

Once Elise approves, Vale Harbor liquidity solves everything.

Adrian replied:

She doesn’t understand the structure. I’ll handle her.

My chest tightened.

Another message.

Celeste to Claudia:

She still thinks the trust is mostly real estate. Adrian hasn't told her about the credit authority.

I stopped breathing.

They knew more about my inheritance than Adrian ever admitted knowing.

“How?”

Margaret looked grim.

“Someone accessed your trust summary before you received it.”

My skin prickled.

“Who?”

She turned the screen.

Login credentials:

Margaret Sloan Legal — External Trust Portal

Margaret went still.

“That wasn’t me.”

Someone had stolen my attorney’s access too.

Then Julian interrupted.

“Elise.”

He pointed toward the lobby.

Adrian was leaving the lounge.

Alone.

Celeste and Claudia remained behind.

My husband was walking toward the front doors.

Then he stopped.

Turned.

And looked directly toward Julian’s office.

For one terrible second, I thought he could see me.

Then he took out his phone.

Mine rang.

I answered.

“Hi.”

His voice was warm.

“Sweetheart, I’m done earlier than expected.”

I looked through the glass.

“Are you?”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

A pause.

Then I smiled without feeling it.

May you like

“Come home.”

He had no idea I already knew he was lying.
