Chapter 6 - THE FORTY MILLION DOLLAR MARRIAGE

Victoria had never spent the money.

That mattered.

But it existed.

A trust created on her wedding day.

$40 million.

Funded by a Bellori family settlement.

Condition:

Remain legally married to Dante for three years.

She did.

Exactly three years.

Then divorced.

I felt sick.

“You were paid?”

Victoria shook her head.

“Not the way it looks.”

“It looks like forty million dollars.”

“I didn’t know before the wedding.”

“When did you know?”

“The day after.”

Dante looked equally shocked.

He had not known either.

The settlement was arranged by our father and Gianna Moretti.

Why?

Victoria’s Bellori voting rights were valuable.

Marriage transferred temporary proxy rights to Dante.

The $40 million compensated her for surrendering control.

Technically legal.

Ethically filthy because nobody told her.

Then why keep it?

Victoria answered:

“I was trying to trace where it came from.”

The trust funds were not clean.

They came partly from companies tied to Salvatore’s criminal operations.

If Victoria touched the money, she risked laundering exposure.

So she froze it.

Spent three years gathering evidence.

Her “marriage” to Dante became more than camouflage.

She had been investigating from inside.

I looked at her differently.

Still angry.

But differently.

Then Gianna’s payments to Marcus made sense.

She wanted Leo outside Chicago because his existence could reopen the Bellori succession structure and expose the trust’s origin.

If Leo’s paternity became public, regulators could review the entire chain of transactions.

“Then why not kill him?” I asked quietly.

Dante’s eyes hardened.

Gianna had not.

Because she was not Salvatore.

She paid Marcus to watch us and keep everyone else away.

Again:

Protection through control.

I was so tired of powerful people loving like jailers.

Then Victoria produced bank records.

The $40 million trust had generated another transaction six months ago.

Unauthorized withdrawal attempt:

$12 million.

Destination:

Carter Development.

Marcus.

He had stopped accepting Gianna’s hush payments and started trying to seize the fund.

Why?

Because Dad was dead.

Salvatore dead.

The old balance collapsed.

Marcus believed the secret era was over.

Then my phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

A photograph of Leo entering Mia’s mother’s house.

Timestamp:

Ten minutes earlier.

Message:

FORTY MILLION FOR THE BOY.

My blood froze.

Dante was already moving.

I grabbed his arm.

“No army.”

He looked at me.

“My son is threatened.”

“My son is not a trigger for your war.”

Silence.

Then he nodded.

Called police.

Private security around Mia’s mother only.

No retaliation.

That choice mattered.

Then Mia called.

“Elena, we’re okay.”

“Leo?”

“With me.”

“Did anyone approach?”

“No.”

Then she whispered:

“But someone left a box at the door.”

Inside:

A toy car.

And a memory card.

Video.

My father.

Recorded one week before death.

“If Marcus threatens Leo, it means he knows the child is not merely Dante’s heir.”

I stared.

What else could Leo possibly be?

Dad continued:

“Elena, your son inherited something from you that no Moretti knows exists.”

Then:

“You own half of the Bellori voting trust.”

Victoria turned toward me.

May you like

I had not been the powerless younger sister.

I had been an owner all along.
