Chapter 10 - THE FIRST TIME DANTE MET HIS SON PROPERLY

Dante did not touch Leo until Leo asked.

That mattered more than I expected.

They met in my hotel suite.

Mia there.

Child therapist there.

Me there.

No Moretti men.

No suits with guns.

Leo brought toy cars.

Dante brought nothing extravagant.

Just a wooden train set.

Apparently he asked the therapist what was appropriate.

Progress.

Leo sat on the floor.

“Do you have a house?”

“Yes.”

“Big?”

“Yes.”

“Bigger than Mommy’s?”

Dante looked at me.

“Probably.”

Leo nodded.

“Mommy’s is better.”

I nearly laughed.

Dante did.

Good.

Then Leo asked:

“Why didn’t you come to my birthday?”

There it was.

Children arrive at truth without ceremony.

Dante answered:

“I didn’t know you existed.”

“Why?”

“Your mom and I were apart.”

“Why?”

I almost intervened.

Dante looked at me.

Permission?

I nodded slightly.

“Because I made choices that hurt her.”

Simple.

No family conspiracy dump.

No blaming.

Leo considered.

“Did you say sorry?”

“Yes.”

“Did she say okay?”

“No.”

Leo frowned at me.

“Mommy.”

I almost choked.

The therapist saved me.

“We don’t make Mommy say okay.”

Leo accepted that.

Dante looked grateful.

Then the heart condition came up later.

Leo would need screening when age-appropriate.

Not because he was sick.

Because information matters.

I made Dante promise:

“No secret medical files.”

“Yes.”

“No family doctor who reports to you.”

“Yes.”

“No decisions without me.”

“Yes.”

Then:

“And no decisions about Leo because you are afraid.”

He took longer.

Then:

“Yes.”

Better honest hesitation than automatic promise.

Meanwhile, investigators completed the inheritance review.

The Bellori structure could be dissolved voluntarily if both Victoria and I agreed.

We did.

Immediately.

Forty million trust?

Converted to restitution pool and clean assets after court review.

Victoria kept only legitimately traceable funds.

My hidden trust?

Same.

Leo’s future Moretti interest?

Converted to independent beneficial trust.

No voting power until twenty-five.

No automatic criminal-business control ever.

Dante signed.

The old system finally started dying.

Then came our father’s final secret.

A videotape from storage.

Dad speaking directly to Dante.

“If Elena comes back with your child, do not marry her quickly.”

I stared.

Dante almost laughed bitterly.

Dad continued:

“You will want to repair everything with the biggest promise you know how to make.”

Correct.

“Don’t.”

Then:

“Let her see who you are when marriage gains you nothing.”

My father had understood Dante better than I wanted to admit.

Then Dad looked into the camera.

“And Elena, if you are watching this, stop rewarding men for suffering quietly.”

I burst into tears and laughter at the same time.

Even dead, Dad had opinions.

Then the tape ended with one final instruction.

“There is still one Moretti account nobody has found.”

Dante went still.

Account name:

May you like

LEO.

Created four years before my son was born.
