Chapter 2 - THE WEDDING WAS A SHIELD

I gave Dante ten minutes.
Not alone.
Mia came.
So did my attorney from Zurich by video.
We met in the private back room of a restaurant I remembered too well.
Dante entered without bodyguards.
That was new.
He looked older.
Not weaker.
More tired.
His eyes went immediately to Leo.
I had left my son with Mia’s mother.
Dante noticed.
Good.
No access by assumption.
“Ten minutes,” I said.
He nodded.
Then he told me the truth.
My father, Anthony Carter, had spent years laundering money through construction contracts controlled by Moretti-connected companies.
Not directly for Dante.
For Dante’s uncle, Salvatore Moretti.
Dante discovered it eight years ago.
He wanted to cut Anthony out.
Then Anthony revealed leverage.
Me.
My father knew Dante loved me.
He also knew the old Moretti family trust contained a dangerous succession rule:
If Dante married outside a short list of “approved” families and produced a child, certain voting rights could move to a rival branch led by Salvatore.
Ridiculous.
Ancient.
Still legally embedded in legitimate family holdings.
Anthony threatened to expose the trust structure, provoke litigation, and put me in the middle.
“Why would that get me killed?”
“Because Salvatore believed eliminating the mother before a legal marriage could prevent a succession claim.”
Cold moved through me.
Dante continued.
“I refused to marry you because I was trying to dismantle the clause first.”
“For eight years?”
His face tightened.
“I thought I had time.”
“You had words.”
“Yes.”
That landed.
Then:
“Two weeks before the wedding, your father told me you were pregnant.”
My hand shook.
“How did he know?”
“He had your medical records accessed.”
I felt sick.
The family gynecologist.
Insurance.
Someone had told him.
Dante continued.
“Salvatore found out too.”
“So you married Victoria.”
“Yes.”
“Why her?”
“Because marrying into the Carter family satisfied the trust clause temporarily without placing you publicly beside me.”
I stared.
“That makes no sense.”
“It did if everyone believed I had chosen your sister and rejected you.”
Pain turned to anger.
“You humiliated me as protection?”
“Yes.”
“That is not protection.”
“I know that now.”
Good.
Then Dante revealed the final piece.
Victoria volunteered.
She learned enough to understand the danger.
Their marriage agreement required no intimacy, no children, and automatic annulment once Salvatore lost trust authority.
“Why didn’t either of you tell me?”
Dante answered:
“Because your father threatened Leo before he was even born.”
My heart stopped.
“He knew?”
“Not that you had left Chicago pregnant.”
“Then what?”
Dante looked at me.
“Anthony had already prepared a plan for any child you might have.”
“What plan?”
He placed a file on the table.
Guardianship documents.
Unsigned.
Mother:
Elena Carter.
Father:
Dante Moretti.
Proposed guardian:
May you like
Anthony Carter.
My father had planned to take my future child from me if Dante ever gave me one.
