Chapter 9 - RICHARD HARLOW'S CONFESSION

Richard Harlow was found at 6:10 a.m.
Not hiding.
Not fleeing.
Sitting alone in his office on the forty-second floor of Harlow Investments.
He had been drinking.
When Maya arrived with attorneys and federal agents, he looked at Cassandra first.
His daughter stood beside Maya.
Richard’s face collapsed.
“Cass.”
“Don’t.”
He stopped.
Cassandra had changed overnight.
Her arrogance was gone.
What replaced it was worse for Richard.
Disgust.
Maya placed the photograph of Lucas on his desk.
“Who is he?”
Richard stared at it.
For a long time.
Then closed his eyes.
“Lucas.”
“Where is he?”
“I don’t know.”
Cassandra slammed both palms onto the desk.
“Stop lying!”
Richard flinched.
“My whole life, you told me our family built everything from nothing.”
Tears filled her eyes.
“You paid people to bury secrets. You took Vale money. You hid my brother.”
“Cassandra—”
“Did you sell him?”
“No!”
The answer came instantly.
Maybe true.
Maybe not.
Maya sat across from Richard.
“Then tell us what happened.”
He looked at the agents.
“I want immunity.”
Julian laughed once.
“You are in no position to negotiate immunity.”
Richard looked at Maya.
“Then you’ll never know.”
Maya studied him.
Powerful men always believed information was currency.
So she changed the market.
She slid a document across the desk.
Richard read it.
His face went white.
“What is this?”
“Emergency freeze petition.”
Cassandra looked at Maya.
Maya continued.
“Harlow Investments received funds from disputed Valecrest entities.”
Richard’s jaw tightened.
“We are moving to freeze assets pending trust litigation.”
“You can’t.”
“We already filed.”
His hands started shaking.
Maya leaned closer.
“You can protect your money.”
He looked up.
“Or your secrets.”
Silence.
Richard finally spoke.
“I loved Lucas.”
Cassandra’s face broke.
“You raised him?”
“For three years.”
“As your son?”
“Yes.”
“Did he know Adrian was his father?”
“Not then.”
Maya asked:
“What happened when Adrian came?”
Richard stared out the window.
“He wanted Lucas.”
“And you let him take him.”
“No.”
“But Lucas ended up in Vermont.”
“Caroline agreed.”
Cassandra whispered:
“Mom?”
Richard nodded.
“Adrian threatened to expose the affair and destroy us.”
“So you accepted money.”
“I accepted a settlement.”
Cassandra laughed bitterly.
“Of course you did.”
Richard looked ashamed.
“Lucas went to Vermont under protection.”
“Whose?”
“David Rook.”
Maya’s childhood security chief.
The same man who raised her after Adrian vanished.
Everything connected through him.
“Where is Rook?”
Richard shook his head.
“Dead.”
“When?”
“Ten years ago.”
Maya frowned.
Records showed he had simply disappeared.
“How?”
Richard looked at her.
“He was murdered.”
The office went still.
“By who?”
“I don’t know.”
“Why wasn’t it reported?”
“Because his body was never found.”
Again.
No body.
Like Adrian.
Maybe this family specialized in disappearing people instead of burying them.
Maya asked:
“What happened seventeen days before my father vanished?”
Richard’s face tightened.
“Lucas ran.”
“From school?”
“No.”
“From who?”
Richard looked at Cassandra.
Then Maya.
“From Adrian.”
Maya froze.
“What?”
“Lucas learned who his father was.”
“So?”
“He hated him.”
“Why?”
Richard’s eyes filled with something dark.
“Because Adrian had ordered people to watch Caroline for years.”
Cassandra whispered:
“My mother?”
“Yes.”
“He controlled where Lucas went. Who he saw. What school he attended.”
Maya felt sick.
Her father’s obsession with control had reached his son too.
“Lucas escaped.”
“How?”
“Someone helped him.”
“Who?”
“Elena.”
Maya’s mother.
Again.
“Elena helped Lucas run?”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
“I don’t know.”
“You’re lying.”
“I swear.”
“Then why did my father disappear?”
“Because he thought Elena betrayed him.”
“Did she?”
Richard whispered:
“Yes.”
Cassandra stepped backward.
Maya remained still.
“So the staged helicopter flight…”
“Was supposed to get Elena to lead Adrian to Lucas.”
Samuel had said they staged it together.
Richard was saying Adrian manipulated Elena.
Different story.
Again.
“Did Elena know?”
“At first, yes.”
“At first?”
“Adrian told her they were disappearing to protect Maya.”
Maya’s skin prickled.
“But really?”
“He wanted Lucas.”
The cruelty of it hit her.
Maya had been the excuse.
Lucas the target.
Elena trapped between them.
“What happened offshore?”
Richard shook his head.
“I only know what Elena told Caroline later.”
Maya leaned forward.
“They stayed in contact?”
“Yes.”
“Where is Caroline?”
Richard looked toward Cassandra.
Cassandra went pale.
“My mother left for Europe yesterday.”
Maya turned.
“Why?”
Cassandra stared at her phone.
“She said it was a wellness retreat.”
Nobody believed that now.
Maya looked at Richard.
“What did Elena tell Caroline?”
His voice dropped.
“That Adrian never made it off the cargo vessel.”
Silence.
Maya stopped breathing.
“Are you saying my mother killed him?”
Richard shook his head.
“I’m saying there was a fight.”
“Between who?”
“Elena.”
He hesitated.
“And Lucas.”
Maya stared.
“Lucas was on the vessel?”
May you like
Richard nodded slowly.
“He had been there the entire time.”
