Chapter 10 - THE HEIR WHO CAME BACK

By noon, Maya no longer knew whether Adrian Vale was victim, villain, or both.

Every new truth destroyed an older one.

Lucas had not simply disappeared.

Elena had helped him escape.

Adrian staged his own disappearance partly to find him.

Somehow Lucas ended up aboard the cargo vessel.

There was a confrontation.

Then Adrian vanished for real.

No body.

No verified death.

Only silence.

And now, twelve years later, Lucas had apparently returned to Aurelia.

The question was why.

Maya returned to the building with Cassandra.

They did not speak much.

Something strange had happened between them.

Less than twenty-four hours earlier, Cassandra had laughed while Maya climbed out of the pool.

Now they were chasing the same family secret.

Not friends.

Not yet.

But no longer simple enemies.

Federal teams searched the basement.

The vault was catalogued.

Richard remained with attorneys.

Caroline Harlow’s flight was traced to Geneva.

Samuel was questioned.

Victor’s financial records were subpoenaed.

Howard Bell stopped answering calls.

That worried Maya.

Olivia remained missing.

That worried her more.

At 2:18 p.m., building security found a service elevator log.

Someone had used B4 access again.

That morning.

After police arrived.

Impossible.

Unless the system had another entry point.

Maya followed security to a maintenance corridor behind the hotel kitchens.

A wall panel opened onto a narrow stairwell.

Old.

Concrete.

Leading down.

“This isn’t on the plans,” Julian said.

Samuel, standing behind them, whispered:

“Adrian built escape routes.”

Maya looked at him.

“How many?”

“I only knew about two.”

“And this?”

“Not one of them.”

They descended.

The stairwell ended behind the vault.

A rear access chamber.

Someone had been living there.

Not for years.

For days.

Blanket.

Water.

Food packaging.

Laptop charger.

Medical kit.

On a crate sat photographs.

Not surveillance photographs.

Family photographs.

Adrian holding baby Maya.

Elena on a beach.

A young boy beside her.

Lucas.

Maya picked one up.

The boy looked about eight.

He had Maya’s eyes.

On the back:

M + L, 2003.

Maya whispered:

“My mother kept these.”

Julian looked around.

“Or Lucas did.”

Then Cassandra found something inside the medical kit.

Prescription bottle.

Name:

LUCAS VALE.

Current date.

Everyone froze.

“He’s here,” Maya whispered.

A sound came from the corridor.

Footsteps.

Security moved first.

“Stay behind us.”

Maya ignored the instruction.

She stepped toward the doorway.

A man appeared at the far end of the corridor.

Dark coat.

Baseball cap.

Same man from the security footage.

He stopped.

Maya stopped too.

Neither moved.

For twelve years, she had believed she was Adrian Vale’s only child.

Now her brother stood less than thirty feet away.

“Lucas?”

The man slowly removed his cap.

He looked like Adrian.

But not exactly.

His expression was harder.

Older than his years.

A scar crossed his left temple.

Cassandra whispered:

“Oh my God.”

Lucas looked at her.

His face changed.

“Caroline’s daughter.”

Cassandra swallowed.

“You know me?”

“I know everyone.”

His eyes returned to Maya.

“You shouldn’t have opened the vault.”

Maya stepped forward.

“You came back.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To stop them.”

“Who?”

Lucas almost laughed.

“You still think this is about Victor and Richard?”

Maya felt cold.

“Then who?”

He looked toward Samuel.

Samuel went pale.

Lucas’s expression hardened.

“Ask him who funded Olivia.”

Everyone turned.

Samuel whispered:

“I didn’t.”

Lucas smiled without humor.

“No?”

Maya looked at Samuel.

“Did you?”

“No.”

Lucas reached into his coat.

Security tensed.

He slowly removed a phone.

Placed it on the floor.

Slid it toward Maya.

“Open the last video.”

Maya picked it up.

There was one file.

She pressed play.

Security footage.

A private room.

Date:

Six months ago.

Samuel Grayson entered.

Then Victor.

Then Howard Bell.

Richard Harlow.

Olivia.

And finally—

Maya stopped breathing.

Elena Vale.

Her mother.

Alive.

Older.

Elegant.

Very much alive.

Cassandra gasped.

Samuel closed his eyes.

Maya stared at him.

“You said you hadn’t seen her in seven years.”

He said nothing.

The video continued.

Elena stood at the table.

Her voice was clear.

“Maya cannot know Lucas is alive until the trust transfers.”

Maya’s hands started shaking.

Victor asked:

“And if she reveals herself early?”

Elena looked directly toward the camera.

Then said:

“Force the reveal.”

The video ended.

Maya could barely breathe.

The rooftop.

Olivia.

The shove.

The pendant.

The witnesses.

All of it.

Her mother had planned it.

Maya looked at Lucas.

“Why?”

He stepped closer.

“Because the public claim activated the succession war.”

“What war?”

“The one our parents never finished.”

Maya stared at the phone.

“Where is my mother?”

Lucas looked toward the hidden tunnel.

“Gone.”

“Where?”

“I don’t know.”

“Why should I believe you?”

“You shouldn’t.”

That answer stopped her.

Lucas continued.

“You shouldn’t believe me.”

He looked at Samuel.

“Or him.”

Then Victor.

“Or Richard.”

Finally, he looked back at Maya.

“Especially not Elena.”

Maya’s voice dropped.

“What does she want?”

Lucas said nothing for several seconds.

Then:

“What every Vale has always wanted.”

“Control?”

“No.”

His expression changed.

“Survival.”

Maya frowned.

“From who?”

Lucas looked toward the ceiling.

Toward the building.

Toward the city above them.

“There’s another trust.”

Julian stepped forward.

“What trust?”

Lucas smiled sadly.

“The one Adrian never controlled.”

Maya felt something twist inside her.

“What does it own?”

Lucas looked directly at her.

“Valecrest.”

Silence.

Maya stared.

“That’s impossible.”

“No.”

“Who controls it?”

Lucas’s face became unreadable.

“Our grandmother.”

Maya stopped breathing.

“My grandmother is dead.”

Lucas shook his head.

“No.”

Before Maya could respond, every light in the corridor went out.

Emergency alarms screamed above them.

Then the building’s public-address system activated.

A woman’s voice filled every floor of Aurelia.

Calm.

Elderly.

Powerful.

“Maya.”

Maya froze.

Lucas whispered:

“She found you.”

The voice continued.

“You were warned not to claim what was never yours.”

Maya stared into the darkness.

May you like

Then one final sentence echoed through the building:

“Now bring me both of my grandchildren.”
