Chapter 7 - ELENA VALE'S BETRAYAL

Maya did not believe Victor.
Not immediately.
He had lied too many times.
But the documents made it impossible to dismiss completely.
Victor described a ledger Adrian kept off the books.
Not corporate accounting.
Ownership.
Real ownership.
Valecrest Holdings publicly appeared to be controlled by Adrian through layered trusts.
According to Victor, the original ledger proved that years before his disappearance, Adrian transferred portions of the empire into private custodial structures.
One beneficiary.
Elena Vale.
Maya’s mother.
“Why?” Maya asked.
Victor sat at the suite table.
“Because they were planning for divorce.”
Samuel snapped:
“That is not what happened.”
Victor laughed.
“You always protected Elena.”
“Because Adrian terrorized her.”
“You weren’t married to him.”
“Neither were you.”
Maya slammed her hand onto the table.
“Enough.”
Both men stopped.
She looked at Victor.
“Continue.”
He did.
“Elena believed Adrian was hiding assets from her.”
“Was he?”
“Yes.”
“Then she took the ledger?”
“She copied it first.”
“Then?”
“She discovered the Valecrest structure was more complicated than either of them understood.”
Maya frowned.
“What does that mean?”
Howard Bell spoke reluctantly.
“Adrian did not build all of Valecrest.”
Everyone turned.
Howard had been quiet for too long.
Maya looked at him.
“Explain.”
“His father established the original trust.”
“My grandfather?”
“Yes.”
Maya knew almost nothing about him.
Edward Vale had died before she was born.
Public records described him as a shipping entrepreneur.
Howard continued.
“The trust contained succession conditions.”
“What conditions?”
“If Adrian died without a confirmed successor, control divided among trustees.”
“And if he had a successor?”
“It passed primarily to that successor.”
Maya understood.
“Me.”
“Yes.”
“Then why did everyone act like Valecrest collapsed?”
Howard looked uncomfortable.
“Because your legal status was challenged.”
“By who?”
“Certain trustees.”
Victor.
Samuel.
Richard?
Others?
“On what basis?”
Howard hesitated.
“Parentage.”
The room became silent.
Maya stared.
“What?”
Samuel stood.
“Howard.”
Maya turned on him.
“Sit down.”
He did.
Howard continued.
“There was a claim that Adrian was not your biological father.”
Maya felt as if the floor shifted.
Cassandra whispered:
“No way.”
Maya ignored her.
“Who made the claim?”
“Elena.”
That hurt more than it should have.
Maya had no memory of her mother saying anything.
But hearing it still felt like betrayal.
“Why?”
“To stop Adrian from taking you.”
Samuel said quietly:
“It was strategy.”
Maya looked at him.
“You knew.”
“Yes.”
“Was it true?”
He did not answer.
“Was Adrian my biological father?”
Samuel looked toward the window.
“I don’t know.”
Victor scoffed.
“You know more than that.”
Samuel’s eyes hardened.
“So do you.”
Maya felt anger rise.
Every man in the room held fragments of her life like bargaining chips.
She was done accepting fragments.
“Julian.”
“Yes?”
“Tomorrow morning, full DNA and trust analysis.”
He nodded.
“Already started.”
“Find any preserved samples tied to Adrian.”
“We’ll need legal authority.”
“Get it.”
Victor suddenly looked nervous.
Maya noticed.
“Why does that bother you?”
“It doesn’t.”
“You’re lying.”
“No.”
“What happens if Adrian isn’t my father?”
Howard answered before Victor could.
“The Valecrest succession claim could collapse.”
Cassandra gasped.
Maya stayed still.
“And my forty-one percent?”
“Potentially disputed.”
Everything tonight depended on identity.
The pendant.
The trust.
The building.
The archive.
Her power.
Someone had pushed her into a pool and forced her to reveal a claim that might be legally vulnerable.
That could not be coincidence.
Olivia had been watching her.
Maybe the entire scene had been designed not to expose Maya’s power.
But to force her into claiming it publicly.
So someone could challenge it.
Julian saw the same thing.
“This was staged.”
Maya nodded slowly.
“Olivia wanted me to reveal the pendant.”
Cassandra whispered:
“Why?”
Julian answered.
“Because once Maya publicly asserted inheritance rights, an opposing claimant could trigger litigation.”
Maya looked at Victor.
“Is there another claimant?”
His face said yes before his mouth moved.
Samuel whispered:
“Victor.”
Too late.
Maya stood.
“Who?”
Victor looked at Howard.
Howard looked at the floor.
Maya’s voice sharpened.
“Who else can inherit Valecrest?”
Victor finally said:
“Adrian’s son.”
Maya stopped breathing.
“I’m his only child.”
Victor shook his head.
“No.”
Samuel closed his eyes.
Maya stared at him.
“You knew this too?”
Samuel’s silence was answer enough.
Her whole life cracked open another inch.
“Name.”
No one spoke.
“NAME.”
Samuel looked at Maya.
“Lucas.”
“Lucas what?”
He swallowed.
“Vale.”
Maya’s voice became almost inaudible.
“Where is he?”
May you like
Victor looked toward Olivia’s surveillance wall.
“That’s what everyone has been trying to find out.”
