Chapter 8 - THE HEIR NO ONE COULD FIND

Lucas Vale was born two years before Maya.

That was the official answer.

Unofficially, almost nothing about him existed.

No public birth announcement.

No school records under that name.

No photographs.

No confirmed mother.

No death certificate.

Just references buried in private trust correspondence.

Maya read the first document at 3:22 in the morning.

ADRIAN VALE - ISSUE: LUCAS A. VALE, MAYA E. VALE.

Issue.

Legal descendants.

Her hand shook.

“Why would my father hide a son?”

Samuel answered carefully.

“Because Lucas’s mother was married.”

“To who?”

Samuel said nothing.

Victor did.

“Richard Harlow.”

Cassandra stood so abruptly her chair fell backward.

“What?”

Maya stared at her.

Cassandra’s father.

The man paid twelve million dollars after Adrian disappeared.

The man who had entered the vault three days earlier.

Richard Harlow’s wife was Caroline Harlow.

Cassandra’s mother.

Maya felt the pieces rearrange.

“Are you saying my father had a child with Cassandra’s mother?”

Victor shook his head.

“No.”

“Then what are you saying?”

Samuel whispered:

“Lucas was born before Richard married Caroline.”

Cassandra looked sick.

“My mother had a child?”

“Yes.”

“With Adrian Vale?”

Victor nodded.

Cassandra covered her mouth.

Maya stared at her.

For the first time, neither woman saw enemy, servant, rich girl, heiress.

They saw two daughters trapped inside their parents’ secrets.

“Does my father know?” Cassandra asked.

Samuel gave her a sad look.

“He raised Lucas for three years.”

Cassandra’s knees nearly buckled.

She sat down.

“What happened?”

“Adrian demanded custody.”

“Why?”

“Because Lucas was a Vale heir.”

Maya felt cold.

“And Caroline?”

“She refused.”

“Richard?”

Victor answered.

“He took money.”

Cassandra looked at him in horror.

“What?”

“Adrian paid Richard to disappear from Lucas’s legal life.”

“Twelve million?”

Victor shook his head.

“That payment came later.”

“So Dad sold my brother?”

Samuel intervened.

“It was more complicated.”

Cassandra snapped:

“Stop saying that!”

Her voice cracked.

“Every horrible thing you people did becomes ‘complicated’ when you don’t want to call it what it was.”

Nobody answered.

She was right.

Maya looked at the documents.

“What happened to Lucas?”

“Caroline took him overseas,” Samuel said.

“When?”

“When he was four.”

“Did Adrian find him?”

“Yes.”

Maya’s pulse quickened.

“Where?”

“Switzerland.”

“And then?”

Samuel looked at Victor.

Victor looked angry.

“Adrian brought him back.”

“To the U.S.?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“Private school in Vermont.”

Maya stared.

“Was he there when my father disappeared?”

“No.”

“Where was he?”

Nobody knew.

Or claimed not to.

Howard produced another trust memorandum.

Three weeks before Adrian vanished, he had requested confirmation of Lucas’s DNA records.

Maya read it.

“Why?”

Howard said:

“Adrian intended to name a primary successor.”

The room chilled.

“Lucas?”

“Possibly.”

Maya felt something painful and irrational.

Jealousy toward a brother she had never known.

Her father had hidden him.

Maybe preferred him.

Maybe planned to leave everything to him.

Then she hated herself for caring.

A missing child had been dragged through power games before Maya was old enough to understand money.

Julian kept reading.

“Here.”

He pointed to a notation.

SUCCESSION REVIEW SUSPENDED - SUBJECT MISSING.

Maya looked up.

“Lucas disappeared before Adrian?”

“Yes.”

“How long before?”

“Seventeen days.”

Everything stopped.

“Then my father’s disappearance happened after his son vanished?”

Samuel nodded.

“That’s what triggered it.”

Maya stared.

“Triggered what?”

Samuel looked at her.

“Adrian believed someone inside Valecrest took Lucas.”

Victor said:

“He became obsessed.”

Howard added:

“He accused trustees.”

“Who?”

Victor.

Samuel.

Richard.

Howard.

Elena.

Everyone.

Maya whispered:

“So the vault was evidence.”

“Yes.”

“Against whoever took Lucas.”

Samuel nodded.

“That’s why Adrian staged the helicopter disappearance.”

Maya understood.

“He was going underground to find him.”

“Yes.”

“And my mother?”

“She went because she believed Adrian would get himself killed.”

Maya looked at Elena’s photograph.

Her mother hadn’t abandoned her.

She may have been chasing a kidnapped child.

Her half brother.

“Did they find Lucas?”

No one answered.

Maya looked at the fresh envelope again.

Three days ago.

Someone had accessed Adrian’s and Elena’s files.

Maybe because Lucas had resurfaced.

Her phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

A video attachment.

Ten seconds long.

Security footage.

A man entering Aurelia’s basement three nights ago.

Baseball cap.

Dark coat.

He turned briefly toward the camera.

Maya froze.

He looked mid-thirties.

Same eyes as Adrian.

Same jawline Maya saw in her own mirror.

Cassandra stared.

“Oh my God.”

Text appeared beneath the video.

YOU WANTED LUCAS.

NOW FIND OUT WHY HE CAME BACK.

Then another message.

ASK RICHARD WHAT HE DID TO HIM.
