Chapter 14 - THE MAN WHO STOOD BESIDE HIM THE ENTIRE TIME

Alexander Vale had trusted Daniel Mercer with his life.
Daniel had stood beside him through business disputes.
Protected Noah.
Helped Leah and Maya.
And appeared genuinely shocked by every new revelation.
Now Elena was accusing him of helping Victor Kane.
Alexander felt the familiar urge to confront him immediately.
But he stopped.
Because he had learned something during the past several days.
Anger wasn't evidence.
And power wasn't justice.
He contacted Detective Brennan.
"How certain is Elena?"
"She identified Daniel as a man who visited the estate."
Alexander closed his eyes.
"Could she be mistaken?"
"That's what we're investigating."
He nodded.
"Then I want everything handled properly."
Investigators reviewed Daniel's financial records and communications.
Several suspicious transfers emerged.
Security footage showed him entering the old Vale estate months earlier.
He initially denied involvement.
Then admitted he'd been aware Victor used the property.
But he claimed he didn't know Elena was being held there.
Alexander listened to the recorded interview.
His chest tightened.
The man he'd trusted had concealed information.
Whether through fear, greed, or loyalty, Daniel had allowed the conspiracy to continue.
The investigation established that Daniel had knowingly provided security information to Victor.
He also helped conceal the tracking devices.
When confronted with the evidence, he cooperated.
But his cooperation didn't erase his responsibility.
He faced criminal charges.
Alexander felt devastated.
For years, he'd believed loyalty meant the people around him would never question him.
Now he understood that unquestioning loyalty could conceal terrible betrayal.
He had to build a different life.
One where people could tell him the truth without fear.
Meanwhile, Elena recovered.
She was reunited with Leah and Maya in a protected medical setting.
The moment they entered her room, Leah began crying.
"Mom!"
Elena opened her arms.
"My babies."
Leah ran toward her.
Maya followed.
They held one another for what felt like forever.
Alexander watched from the doorway.
He didn't interrupt.
Didn't ask questions.
Didn't demand gratitude.
He simply let them have their moment.
Then Elena noticed Noah.
Alexander held the baby carefully.
Her eyes filled.
"Noah?"
He nodded.
"He's safe."
Elena began crying harder.
"My boy."
Alexander approached.
For eleven months, he'd been Noah's father.
Now he was handing the baby to the woman who had given birth to him.
His chest ached.
But he didn't hesitate.
Elena took Noah in her arms.
She kissed his forehead.
"My baby."
Leah touched his hand.
Maya leaned closer.
For the first time, all three children were together.
Alexander stood nearby.
Tears streamed down his face.
Elena looked up.
"Alexander."
He nodded.
"Yes?"
"Thank you."
He shook his head.
"Your daughter saved him."
Elena looked toward Leah.
Her eyes filled with pride.
"I know."
Leah smiled through tears.
Then Elena looked back at Alexander.
"There's something I want you to understand."
He waited.
"Noah knows you."
Alexander swallowed.
"I know."
"He loves you."
His eyes filled.
"I love him too."
Elena nodded.
"Then I don't want him to lose you."
Alexander stared.
"What?"
She took a breath.
"You raised him."
He looked down.
"You were his father when he needed one."
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Then Elena continued.
"I want us to find a lawful, safe way for you to remain part of his life."
Alexander began crying.
For the first time in years, he didn't care who saw.
Then Sofia entered with her son Julian.
Alexander turned.
His wife.
Alive.
Holding their biological son.
They stood facing each other.
So much time lost.
So much pain.
So many lies.
Sofia smiled through tears.
"Hello, Alexander."
His voice broke.
"Hello, my love."
She approached.
They embraced carefully.
And for a moment, Alexander felt the world become quiet.
Then Sofia looked toward Elena and the children.
She smiled.
"We have a lot to talk about."
Alexander laughed through tears.
"Yes."
Sofia took his hand.
"And a lot to rebuild."
He nodded.
Then Elena spoke softly.
"There's one last thing."
Everyone turned.
She looked toward Leah.
"Sweetheart, I need to tell you something."
Leah's smile faded.
"What?"
Elena took a shaky breath.
"You've spent four days believing you had to protect everyone."
Tears filled Leah's eyes.
Her mother continued.
"But there's something I never told you about your father."
Leah went still.
Alexander looked toward Elena.
May you like
Then she whispered:
"Your father didn't abandon us. He died trying to stop Victor Kane—and his name was Julian Vale."
