Chapter 12 - THE AUNT WHO WAS HIDING IN PLAIN SIGHT

For days, Leah had believed Aunt Celia was simply her mother's older sister.

A woman who lived in Queens.

Who mailed birthday cards.

Who sometimes sent money when Elena struggled to pay rent.

Now Julian's letter suggested Celia was something else.

Someone Victor Kane had never managed to identify.

Alexander contacted investigators.

They arranged a secure interview with Celia Bennett.

When she arrived, Leah ran toward her.

"Aunt Celia!"

Celia dropped to her knees.

"Oh, sweetheart."

They embraced.

Maya joined them.

For several minutes, Celia simply held both girls.

Then she looked toward Alexander.

Her expression changed.

"Mr. Vale."

He nodded.

"Miss Bennett."

She stood.

"Thank you for helping them."

Alexander shook his head.

"Leah helped my son."

Celia looked toward Noah.

Her eyes filled.

"My little nephew."

Alexander watched her.

"You knew?"

She nodded.

"Yes."

Leah looked up sharply.

"Aunt Celia?"

Celia knelt beside her.

"Sweetheart, your mother wanted to tell you."

"Then why didn't she?"

"Because she was frightened Victor would find him."

Leah looked down.

Tears filled her eyes.

Celia hugged her.

"I'm sorry."

Later, Celia explained the truth.

She wasn't simply Elena's sister.

She was a former federal financial investigator who had worked on a case involving the Vale shipping network.

Years earlier, she'd discovered irregular transactions linked to Victor Kane.

When the investigation was compromised, she left the agency and continued documenting the evidence through lawful channels.

Elena helped her.

Julian helped her.

Sofia eventually joined them.

Together, they had tried to expose the network.

But Victor discovered their plan.

Julian died.

Elena disappeared.

Sofia was imprisoned.

And the children became targets.

Alexander listened silently.

For years, he'd believed he controlled every corner of his empire.

Now he realized others had been risking their lives to stop crimes he hadn't even bothered to investigate.

Celia looked at him.

"Alexander, there's something you need to understand."

He nodded.

"Tell me."

"Victor didn't become powerful because he was stronger than you."

Alexander frowned.

"Then how?"

"Because he knew you trusted fear more than people."

The words struck him.

Celia continued.

"He surrounded you with men who obeyed."

"He made sure nobody questioned him."

"And when Julian tried, you dismissed him."

Alexander lowered his head.

She was right.

He had helped create the silence Victor used to hide his crimes.

Then Celia asked:

"Are you willing to change that?"

Alexander looked toward Leah.

The little girl sat beside Maya.

Noah slept nearby.

Three children whose lives had been endangered by the world he'd built.

He nodded.

"Yes."

Celia studied him.

Then smiled faintly.

"Good."

The investigation continued.

Victor's associates were identified.

Financial accounts were frozen.

Several victims received protection.

And the evidence from Julian's safe helped establish the scale of the conspiracy.

But one question remained.

Where was Elena?

Investigators had traced the photograph Victor sent Leah.

The background contained a distinctive blue wall.

A window.

A small piece of artwork.

Celia recognized it.

Her face went pale.

"That's not a warehouse."

Alexander looked up.

"What?"

Celia pointed toward the image.

"That's a room inside the old Vale estate."

His heart stopped.

"My father's house?"

She nodded.

"The property outside New York."

Alexander stared.

The estate had been closed for twenty years.

He believed nobody lived there.

Then Celia whispered:

"Victor has been hiding Elena in the one place you never thought to search—your childhood home."
