Chapter 10 - THE WIFE WHO CAME BACK FROM THE DEAD

Alexander Vale had buried Sofia eleven months earlier.
Now investigators were telling him she was alive.
In Rome.
With a baby boy.
His biological son.
For several seconds, he couldn't speak.
Then he asked:
"Is she safe?"
Daniel nodded.
"Authorities have secured the location. Both are receiving medical care."
Alexander closed his eyes.
Relief moved through him so powerfully that he had to sit down.
Sofia.
Alive.
His wife.
The mother of his children.
But a painful question remained.
Why had she disappeared?
Why had she allowed him to believe she was dead?
And how had Victor convinced an entire medical team to support the lie?
The answers began emerging through interviews.
Sofia had discovered financial crimes connected to Victor's medical investment network.
When she threatened to report them, Victor arranged for her to be confined under a false identity.
The clinic declared her dead.
Her newborn twins were separated.
One was moved to a private residence.
The other disappeared into a network of fraudulent transfers.
Victor then placed Elena's baby, Noah, with Alexander.
A child he could track.
A child he could use to control the powerful man he feared.
Alexander felt sick.
For eleven months, he'd believed Noah was Sofia's child.
Victor had built the lie carefully.
And Alexander had trusted him.
Then investigators uncovered another detail.
Sofia had managed to contact Elena Bennett after escaping from the first facility.
Elena helped her hide.
But Victor discovered them.
Elena was taken.
Sofia fled with one of the twins.
And both women spent months trying to protect the children.
Alexander sat quietly.
He thought about Leah.
A ten-year-old who had been forced to become a parent to her younger sister.
He thought about Maya.
Three years old.
Clinging to a stuffed rabbit.
And Noah.
A baby who had spent an entire flight crying because someone pressed a tracker against his ribs.
The children had suffered because adults wanted control.
He looked toward Daniel.
"I'm cooperating with the investigation."
Daniel nodded.
"Of course."
"Everything. Every company record. Every account connected to Victor."
His expression hardened.
"I want the truth."
Over the following weeks, Alexander faced difficult questions about his own businesses.
Several companies had been used to conceal criminal activity.
Some transactions carried his authorization.
Others had been forged.
He provided records.
Accepted independent audits.
And began separating lawful operations from the criminal network he'd once controlled.
He understood the process might cost him wealth and influence.
For the first time, that seemed unimportant.
Then he received a call.
Sofia.
Her voice was weak.
"Alexander?"
He stopped breathing.
"Sofia."
She began crying.
"I'm sorry."
His eyes filled.
"You're alive."
"Yes."
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Then she whispered:
"I wanted to come home."
Alexander closed his eyes.
"I know."
"I tried."
His voice broke.
"Where are you now?"
"Safe."
He nodded.
"Good."
Then he asked:
"Does our son have a name?"
Sofia smiled through tears.
"Julian."
Alexander covered his mouth.
His brother's name.
She had named their son after the man Victor murdered.
Then Sofia whispered:
"Alexander, there's something you need to know."
His stomach tightened.
"What?"
"Victor didn't choose Noah randomly."
Alexander looked toward the baby.
"Why did he choose him?"
May you like
Sofia took a shaky breath.
"Because Elena Bennett wasn't only your former employee. She was the last person who knew what really happened to your father."
