Chapter 9 - THE SECOND PREGNANCY

Caroline did not cry when she learned Olivia Grant was pregnant.

That surprised everyone.

Especially Graham.

She called him and said only:

“Come to Sophia’s office.”

He arrived twenty minutes later.

Olivia was already there.

Caroline had invited her too.

The senator looked polished, pale, and furious.

Graham stopped when he saw her.

“Caroline.”

“Sit.”

Neither moved.

Caroline rested both hands over her stomach.

Thirty-three weeks now.

Her daughter kicked regularly.

A reminder that whatever happened in the room, Caroline had someone else to protect.

“I know.”

Olivia closed her eyes.

Graham looked at Brooke, who stood near Sophia.

“You told her.”

“Yes.”

“You had no right.”

Caroline laughed.

“You’re discussing rights?”

Graham went silent.

Caroline looked at Olivia.

“Is the baby his?”

Olivia’s face tightened.

“Yes.”

There it was.

No mystery.

No dramatic test.

Just truth.

Caroline inhaled slowly.

Graham said, “I was going to tell you.”

“When?”

He had no answer.

“After my baby came?”

His face changed.

The words from the gala returned.

Just give me until the baby comes.

Caroline stared at him.

“That’s what you meant.”

“What?”

“You told Brooke you needed until the baby came.”

Graham looked confused.

“No.”

“Whose baby?”

He shook his head.

“Caroline, I swear that conversation was about Brooke’s pregnancy and Lucas.”

Brooke nodded.

“He’s telling the truth.”

Caroline laughed once.

“Wonderful. One lie among fifty happens to be true.”

Olivia began crying.

“I never intended this.”

Caroline turned toward her.

“Neither did I.”

“I love him.”

That hurt.

Not because Caroline feared losing Graham.

Because another woman had just claimed love for the man Caroline had built a life with.

Graham looked down.

Caroline saw it.

He loved Olivia too.

Maybe not enough.

Maybe differently.

But enough.

And suddenly she was tired.

Deeply tired.

“I want a divorce.”

Graham looked up.

“Caroline.”

“No negotiations.”

“I know.”

“No counseling.”

He swallowed.

“Okay.”

“You will cooperate with paternity, child support, custody, and every financial audit.”

“Yes.”

“And you will not use our daughter to repair what you did to me.”

His eyes filled.

“I won’t.”

Caroline looked at Olivia.

“And if that baby is his, your child and mine will never be made enemies because their father behaved badly.”

Olivia stared.

“I don’t expect kindness.”

“This isn’t kindness.”

Caroline’s voice sharpened.

“It’s adulthood.”

The divorce filing went in that afternoon.

The press learned within forty-eight hours.

No one leaked the affairs.

Not Caroline.

She refused.

The public statement cited irreconcilable differences.

Graham stepped down from every remaining business role.

Olivia withdrew temporarily from her reelection campaign after revealing her pregnancy but not the father.

For a while, Caroline’s life became oddly quiet.

Then Ethan appeared again.

Not romantically.

Not at first.

He offered her a board seat at Caldwell Urban’s new community development division.

She declined.

“I’m about to have a baby.”

“So?”

“So I don’t want a corporate job.”

“Fine.”

He smiled.

“I expected no.”

“Then why ask?”

“Because you should know people see your value outside Graham.”

That stayed with her.

Weeks later, Caroline went into labor.

Early.

Thirty-five weeks.

Natalie drove.

Graham arrived at the hospital seven minutes after Caroline called.

He stood outside the room until she invited him in.

That mattered.

Their daughter was born at 4:18 a.m.

Six pounds, one ounce.

Healthy lungs.

Dark hair.

Furious cry.

Caroline named her Lily Grace Hayes.

Graham cried openly when he held her.

Caroline watched.

She felt grief.

Love.

Anger.

History.

All at once.

But not reconciliation.

That distinction mattered.

The morning after Lily’s birth, Olivia arrived at the hospital.

Caroline was surprised.

“What are you doing here?”

Olivia held an envelope.

“I thought you deserved this.”

“What?”

“A paternity test.”

Caroline stared.

“You said Graham was the father.”

“I thought he was.”

Graham stood near the window.

His face changed.

Olivia looked at him.

“He isn’t.”

Silence.

Caroline blinked.

“Then who is?”

Olivia began crying.

“Jonathan Pierce.”

The former mayor.

The accused murderer.

The man who had controlled Hayes Development.

Olivia’s affair with Graham had been real.

May you like

But her pregnancy belonged to Pierce.

And that meant Pierce had another reason to manipulate every person in the story.
