Chapter 8 - THE COMPANY THAT HAD ALWAYS BEEN HERS

Caroline owned the company Graham had just lost.

Or at least she had owned it.

The revelation came too late to save Hayes Development in its old form.

But not too late to change everything else.

Walter’s amended will named Caroline as beneficiary of controlling shares after his death.

Why?

No explanation.

The executor had failed to distribute them.

The executor was Jonathan Pierce’s law partner.

Caroline laughed when Sophia told her.

Of course.

Another secret.

Another powerful man deciding what she should know.

The withheld shares meant several transactions Graham made after Walter’s death had technically required Caroline’s approval.

Including the loans.

The forged guarantee.

The transfers.

“This could void some debt,” Sophia said.

“And expose Graham to more liability.”

“Yes.”

Caroline looked through the documents.

“Did Graham know?”

“No evidence he did.”

That mattered.

It did not absolve him of everything.

But it mattered.

Graham came to Natalie’s house that evening.

Caroline handed him Walter’s will.

He read it.

Then sat down.

“My father left you the company.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“I don’t know.”

Graham stared at the floor.

“He trusted you more than me.”

“That’s not necessarily flattering.”

“No.”

He laughed bitterly.

“He knew what kind of man I was becoming.”

Caroline did not answer.

Graham looked at her.

“I destroyed something that wasn’t even mine.”

“Yes.”

“And I nearly destroyed you with it.”

“Yes.”

He nodded slowly.

“No defense.”

That was new.

Caroline had spent years watching Graham solve every problem with explanation, charm, or money.

Now he had none.

“I’ll cooperate with every investigation,” he said.

“Good.”

“I’ll sign whatever Sophia recommends.”

“Good.”

“And I’m moving out.”

Caroline’s heart shifted.

“Why?”

“Because asking you to live with me after what I did would be another way of making my needs your responsibility.”

That answer hurt.

Because it was correct.

“Where?”

“Hotel for now.”

“You don’t need my permission.”

“I know.”

Before leaving, he paused.

“Can I still come to prenatal appointments?”

Caroline looked at him.

“For the baby.”

“Yes.”

“Not for us.”

“I understand.”

She nodded.

“Yes.”

He whispered, “Thank you.”

Two weeks passed.

The scandal widened.

Pierce resigned as mayor before prosecutors formally charged him with corruption and Lucas Martin’s murder.

Brooke inherited the Sutton trust.

She immediately hired independent attorneys.

To Caroline’s surprise, she also returned every dollar improperly routed through her accounts.

“I don’t want anything connected to fraud,” she said.

“You helped blackmail Graham.”

“I know.”

“Why?”

Brooke looked ashamed.

“Because I hated him.”

“For being Walter’s legitimate son.”

“Yes.”

“And me?”

Brooke’s eyes filled.

“I envied you.”

Caroline almost laughed.

“You envied the pregnant woman whose husband you helped deceive?”

“I envied that Graham loved you.”

Caroline’s expression hardened.

“He had an affair.”

Brooke shook her head.

“Not with me.”

Caroline went still.

Brooke continued.

“I let you think it because Graham told me to.”

“Why?”

“Because the real affair would destroy something bigger.”

Caroline’s stomach tightened.

“What real affair?”

Brooke looked toward the door.

Then back.

“There is another woman.”

The room became silent.

“Who?”

Brooke hesitated.

“A state senator.”

Caroline stared.

“Name.”

“Olivia Grant.”

Caroline knew her.

Everyone did.

Forty-two.

Married.

Rising political star.

And one of Harbor House’s most vocal public supporters.

“How long?”

“About a year.”

Caroline’s chest tightened.

Longer than Brooke.

Longer than the lie Graham confessed.

“Did it end?”

Brooke swallowed.

“I don’t know.”

Caroline stood.

“Why would Graham protect her?”

“Because Senator Grant sits on the state redevelopment committee.”

Of course.

A political scandal would destroy both of them.

“And Pierce knew?”

“Yes.”

Caroline finally understood.

The affair wasn’t separate from the corruption.

It was leverage.

Pierce had known Graham was sleeping with Olivia.

He had used it to control votes, permits, and contracts.

And Graham had let him.

Caroline felt something inside her finally break cleanly.

Not painfully.

Cleanly.

The marriage was over.

Then Brooke added:

“Olivia is pregnant too.”

Caroline stopped.

“What?”

“About twelve weeks.”

“And you think the baby is Graham’s?”

May you like

Brooke looked at her with pity.

“Yes.
