Chapter 12 - THE DAUGHTER OF THE MAN WHO DESTROYED THEM

Brooke Sutton was Jonathan Pierce’s daughter.
Walter Hayes had known.
So had Evelyn.
Charles Sutton had raised her anyway.
Pierce had hidden the truth for thirty-four years.
Why?
Because Brooke’s mother, Diane, had been seventeen when she became pregnant.
Pierce had been twenty-eight.
The revelation transformed the case.
It was not just adultery.
It raised disturbing questions about coercion and abuse.
Diane had apparently threatened to expose Pierce years later.
Then Walter helped arrange a financial settlement and allowed Brooke to believe he was her biological father.
Brooke cried for hours.
Caroline stayed.
She was surprised by that.
Once, she would have enjoyed watching Brooke suffer.
Now she understood something.
Pain did not become justice merely because it happened to someone who hurt you.
Pierce had manipulated Brooke too.
Lucas Martin discovered the paternity while investigating old Hayes records.
That was why he approached her.
Not to seduce her initially.
To tell her the truth.
Then they fell in love.
Messy.
Complicated.
Real.
Pierce found out.
And killed him.
The motive prosecutors needed was finally complete.
Pierce was convicted of Lucas Martin’s murder.
He received life without parole.
When sentencing ended, Brooke stood outside the courthouse.
Reporters shouted.
She ignored them.
Caroline waited beside her.
“Why are you here?” Brooke asked.
“I don’t know.”
Brooke laughed through tears.
“Fair.”
Then she hugged Caroline.
Caroline hesitated.
Then hugged her back.
Not forgiveness for everything.
But something near peace.
Graham attended too.
Afterward, he approached Caroline.
“Thank you.”
“For what?”
“Not letting Brooke go through this alone.”
“She’s not your sister anymore.”
He smiled sadly.
“She was for five years.”
That answer made Caroline like him for one second.
Which was inconvenient.
Two years had passed since the Alder House gala.
Lily was running now.
Talking constantly.
Calling Graham “Daddy” and Ethan “Eefan.”
Ethan pretended to be offended.
Hayes Haven Development had broken ground on its fifth project.
Caroline’s life was bigger than the marriage she lost.
One evening, Ethan cooked dinner.
Badly.
Lily threw peas.
Caroline laughed.
Then Ethan put a small velvet box on the table.
Caroline froze.
Lily immediately grabbed it.
“Mine.”
“No,” Ethan said.
“Yes.”
They wrestled gently.
Caroline laughed until she cried.
Finally Ethan recovered the box.
He did not kneel.
Good.
He sat.
“Caroline.”
Her heart raced.
“I love you.”
“I know.”
“I love Lily.”
“I know.”
“I don’t want to replace anyone.”
That mattered.
“I don’t want to own the life you built after everything fell apart.”
That mattered even more.
“I just want to be part of it.”
He opened the box.
Simple ring.
Beautiful.
“Will you marry me?”
Caroline looked at Lily.
Then at Ethan.
Then at the life around her.
“Yes.”
Ethan exhaled.
Lily clapped because she thought everyone was celebrating peas.
Caroline laughed.
Then her phone rang.
Graham.
She almost ignored it.
Something made her answer.
“Graham?”
His voice sounded strange.
“Caroline, I need you to come to the hospital.”
Her smile vanished.
“Why?”
“It’s Lily.”
Caroline’s heart stopped.
May you like
“She collapsed during my visit.”
The ring slipped from her fingers.
