Chapter 7 - THE COMPANY THAT NEVER BELONGED TO THEM

Richard asked everyone except my brothers and me to leave the dining room.

Margaret refused.

“This is my family too.”

Richard looked at her.

“I’m no longer certain what you’ve made of this family.”

She went silent.

Adrian stayed.

So did Vanessa, because Detective Bishop had asked her not to leave the property yet.

Richard placed both hands flat on the table.

“When my father founded Cole Dominion, he didn’t do it alone.”

Everyone knew that.

The official history credited Richard’s father, Henry Cole, and two investors.

Richard continued.

“But one investor remained silent.”

Dominic asked:

“Why?”

“Because of where the money came from.”

My stomach tightened.

Richard looked at us.

“The Moretti family.”

Matteo laughed once.

“That’s impossible.”

“Our grandfather?”

Richard nodded.

“Vittorio Moretti.”

I barely remembered the name.

Our grandfather died before I was born.

Our father almost never spoke about him.

Dominic looked skeptical.

“Granddad owned part of Cole Dominion?”

“Not exactly.”

Richard explained.

In the early years, Henry Cole had been nearly bankrupt.

Vittorio Moretti provided equipment, transport, labor contacts, and most importantly, cash.

Not a loan.

Capital.

The agreement entitled Vittorio to thirty percent of the enterprise after certain debts were repaid.

But the agreement was never publicly filed.

“Why?” Gabriel asked.

Richard looked ashamed.

“Henry refused to honor it.”

Dominic’s face hardened.

“And our grandfather?”

“He threatened litigation.”

“What happened?”

“He died.”

Silence.

I felt cold.

“How?”

“Heart attack.”

Nico asked:

“Was there anything suspicious about it?”

“I don’t know.”

Dominic’s voice became hard.

“You’d better know more than that.”

Richard shook his head.

“I was sixteen.”

That stopped him.

Richard wasn’t defending his father.

He was describing a story he had inherited.

“Years later,” Richard continued, “Antonio found the original agreement.”

Our father.

“He confronted me.”

“When?”

“During the pension investigation.”

Everything connected.

Our father discovered fraud while doing business with Cole Dominion.

During that process, he discovered his own father’s old ownership claim.

“So Dad could have sued you,” Luca said.

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t he?”

Richard’s eyes filled with something I had never expected to see there.

Respect.

“Because it would have destroyed thousands of employees to settle a family debt from decades earlier.”

That sounded exactly like our father.

“He made me sign a private acknowledgment,” Richard said. “If Cole Dominion was ever sold, liquidated, or transferred outside the Cole family, the Moretti trust would receive the value of the original stake.”

Gabriel leaned back.

“How much would thirty percent be worth today?”

Richard looked toward him.

“Depending on valuation?”

He swallowed.

“More than three hundred million.”

Nobody spoke.

Adrian sat down hard.

Margaret looked sick.

I understood her fear now.

If Richard named me interim chair, I would gain access to company records.

Eventually, someone might discover the historical obligation.

Stephen Wren already had.

Maybe that was the real pressure point.

I asked:

“Did Stephen know?”

Richard nodded.

“He witnessed Antonio confronting me.”

Dominic stared at the photograph.

“Then why would he come back now?”

Gabriel answered.

“Because of the succession.”

He opened the Moretti trust documents.

“Dad’s acknowledgment rights passed into the family trust.”

Luca looked toward me.

“Elena controls the trust.”

Everyone followed his eyes.

Again.

Adrian whispered:

“So if Elena becomes chair…”

“She would effectively sit on both sides of the obligation,” Gabriel said.

Cole Dominion.

And the trust holding a potential three-hundred-million-dollar claim against it.

Margaret looked at me with pure hatred.

“You knew.”

“No.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

“I didn’t even know Grandpa invested.”

“You people planned this.”

Dominic stood.

“Careful.”

I touched his arm again.

Then looked at Margaret.

“My family had twenty-two years to use this against yours.”

She stopped.

“We didn’t.”

Richard nodded.

“Antonio refused.”

Something inside Margaret broke.

“Antonio, Antonio, Antonio.”

She laughed bitterly.

“You worship a dead man while humiliating your own son.”

Richard looked at her.

“Our son humiliated himself.”

Adrian looked away.

Nico’s phone rang again.

This time he put it on speaker.

Detective Bishop’s voice.

“We found something in the guesthouse safe.”

“What?”

“A flash drive and a handwritten ledger.”

Gabriel leaned forward.

“What’s in the ledger?”

“We’re still reviewing it.”

Bishop paused.

“But there’s one thing you should know now.”

The room became silent.

“The ledger contains payments going back nineteen years.”

“To who?” Richard asked.

“Judges. Inspectors. Procurement officers.”

Cole Dominion corruption.

Richard looked horrified.

Then Bishop added:

“And one Moretti.”

Every brother froze.

I felt my heartbeat change.

“Which one?”

May you like

The detective answered:

“Dominic.”
