Chapter 3 - WHAT MY FATHER GUARANTEED

Adrian stared at me as if I had suddenly become a stranger.

“You guaranteed my family’s company?”

“No.”

My voice was calm.

“My father did.”

“You never told me.”

“You never asked.”

“That’s not something a wife hides.”

I almost smiled.

“Interesting standard.”

His eyes dropped.

Richard looked older than he had an hour earlier.

He picked up the guarantee agreement.

“I thought this expired.”

Luca shook his head.

“The primary facility was refinanced. The contingent indemnity wasn’t.”

Richard looked toward Dominic.

“You knew?”

Dominic nodded.

“Our father asked us not to interfere unless the guarantee became exposed.”

“Exposed how?”

Gabriel answered.

“Fraud.”

The word traveled through the ballroom.

Richard looked at the transfers again.

I could almost see him calculating.

Vendor fraud.

Undisclosed related parties.

Possible bank covenant breaches.

Government contracts.

If even part of Gabriel’s analysis was correct, Cole Dominion didn’t simply have a family scandal.

It had a disclosure problem.

A financing problem.

Possibly a criminal problem.

Richard looked at Adrian.

“How much of this is yours?”

“Dad, listen—”

“How much?”

Adrian’s arrogance was gone.

“I can explain the payments.”

“Then explain.”

Adrian looked around at fifty guests.

The same audience he had enjoyed when humiliating me now felt unbearable.

“Not here.”

Richard gave a bitter laugh.

“You made Elena apologize to your mistress in front of these people.”

Adrian flinched.

Richard pointed toward the screen.

“You can explain eleven million dollars in front of them.”

Vanessa suddenly moved toward the door.

Nico spoke without raising his voice.

“I wouldn’t leave yet.”

She turned.

“Are you threatening me?”

“No.”

“Then get out of my way.”

“I’m nowhere near you.”

That was true.

He hadn’t moved.

“But your car is company-leased, and there’s a preservation request being prepared for the devices inside it.”

Vanessa’s face paled.

“You can’t seize my property.”

Luca replied:

“We can’t. Law enforcement can, if appropriate. We’re preserving evidence and notifying counsel. Different thing.”

Vanessa looked at Adrian.

“You said your family would protect me.”

Richard’s head snapped toward him.

Adrian whispered:

“Vanessa, stop.”

She laughed.

“No.”

Her voice shook.

“You told me Richard was stepping down.”

Richard went still.

I looked at Adrian.

That was new.

Vanessa continued.

“You told me once the Chicago deal closed, you would become CEO.”

Richard stared at his son.

“What Chicago deal?”

Adrian’s face collapsed.

Margaret stepped in.

“Vanessa, you’ve had too much to drink.”

Vanessa turned on her.

“You approved it!”

Richard looked at Margaret.

“Approved what?”

Nobody answered.

Gabriel’s fingers moved across his keyboard.

He opened another file.

“I wondered about that.”

A map appeared.

Downtown Chicago.

A development parcel near the river.

Cole Dominion had publicly announced exploratory interest in the project six months earlier.

Richard stepped closer.

“We withdrew.”

Gabriel shook his head.

“Cole Dominion withdrew.”

Richard’s eyes narrowed.

Gabriel displayed state corporate records.

A private entity had acquired an option on the property three days later.

CROWN MERIDIAN DEVELOPMENT LLC.

Richard read the owner names.

Adrian Cole.

Margaret Cole.

Vanessa Hart.

His knees seemed to weaken.

“You took the deal.”

Margaret finally lost her composure.

“We saved it.”

“It belonged to the company.”

“The board rejected it.”

“Because the environmental liabilities were unacceptable.”

Adrian stepped forward.

“We found a workaround.”

Gabriel said:

“You found a way to use Cole Dominion feasibility studies while placing the upside in your private company.”

Richard’s face turned red.

“That’s theft.”

Adrian shouted:

“It’s my legacy too!”

The ballroom went dead.

Richard stared at his only son.

“No.”

Adrian blinked.

“What?”

“You don’t inherit something by stealing it before I’m dead.”

Margaret stepped between them.

“You’ve humiliated him his entire life.”

Richard looked stunned.

“I gave him everything.”

“You gave him titles without control.”

“Because he wasn’t ready!”

“And Elena was?”

Everyone looked at me again.

I frowned.

“What does Elena have to do with company succession?”

Richard’s face changed.

That was when I realized there was still something nobody had told me.

He looked at me with genuine regret.

“Elena…”

Adrian suddenly shouted:

“Don’t.”

Too late.

Richard closed his eyes.

“Three months ago, the board voted on my succession plan.”

My heartbeat slowed.

“And?”

Richard looked directly at me.

“I nominated you as interim executive chair.”

I stared at him.

Adrian whispered:

May you like

“That was supposed to stay confidential.”

And suddenly the affair, the humiliation, the money, and Margaret’s hatred fit together in a completely different way.
