Chapter 1 - THE FIVE MEN AT THE DOOR

The ballroom doors opened.

Dominic entered first.

He wore a dark suit, no tie, his expression unreadable. Behind him came Matteo, Luca, Gabriel, and Nico.

None of them hurried.

None of them looked angry.

That was what made the room so quiet.

Adrian had spent years making jokes about my brothers because he imagined men like them would arrive shouting, threatening people, pounding fists against tables.

Instead, Luca carried a leather legal case.

Gabriel had a slim laptop under one arm.

Nico held a phone and a sealed evidence envelope.

Matteo carried nothing at all.

Dominic simply looked at me.

His eyes moved once over my face, then toward Adrian.

“Are you okay?”

That was the first thing anyone had asked me all night.

I nodded.

“I am now.”

Adrian forced a laugh.

“This is ridiculous.”

Dominic ignored him.

He walked over, kissed my forehead, then stepped beside me.

My other brothers followed.

Gabriel hugged me carefully.

Nico whispered, “Happy birthday, little sister.”

Matteo glanced toward the stained silver dress Vanessa was still wearing and raised one eyebrow.

“Interesting party.”

Luca was the last to hug me.

Then he faced Adrian.

“You must be very proud of yourself.”

Adrian’s face tightened.

“This is my family’s house.”

Luca smiled faintly.

“Good. That’ll make service easier.”

Richard Cole stepped forward.

“Service?”

Luca opened the leather case.

The room changed immediately.

Richard knew lawyers.

He had built Cole Dominion Construction through twenty-seven years of contracts, acquisitions, zoning battles, lawsuits, and government projects.

He recognized the tone.

“What exactly are you serving?”

“Nothing yet.”

Luca removed a folder.

“I prefer people understand their position before they create additional problems.”

Margaret scoffed.

“This is still Elena’s birthday party.”

“No,” I said.

Everyone looked at me.

“It stopped being that when Adrian decided humiliating me was entertainment.”

Vanessa folded her arms.

“Oh, please.”

Nico looked at her for the first time.

“Vanessa Hart?”

Her expression flickered.

“How do you know my name?”

Nico lifted the sealed envelope.

“I know several of your names.”

Adrian stepped toward him.

“What is that supposed to mean?”

Dominic moved half a step.

That was all.

Adrian stopped.

Nico spoke calmly.

“For the last three weeks, Elena has known about your relationship with Ms. Hart.”

Color disappeared from Adrian’s face.

Vanessa turned toward him.

“You said she didn’t know.”

There it was.

The first fracture.

Adrian glared at me.

“You had me followed?”

“No,” I said. “I had facts verified.”

“You invaded my privacy.”

Gabriel almost laughed.

“You used a corporate expense account to pay for hotel rooms.”

Richard’s head snapped toward his son.

“What?”

Adrian went still.

Gabriel opened his laptop.

“Fourteen stays in eight months. Three different hotels. Eleven charged through Cole Dominion subsidiary cards.”

Richard’s expression hardened.

“Adrian.”

“They were client meetings.”

Nico looked at Vanessa.

“At two in the morning?”

A few guests looked away.

Others leaned closer.

The humiliation Adrian had intended for me had begun circling back.

But the affair was no longer the most important thing in the room.

Gabriel clicked once.

A spreadsheet appeared on the television screen normally used for family videos.

Rows of transfers.

Vendor names.

Invoice numbers.

Amounts.

Richard stared.

“What is this?”

Gabriel answered:

“Payments authorized by Adrian through four shell vendors.”

Adrian’s face drained.

Margaret snapped:

“Turn that off.”

Gabriel didn’t.

Richard walked closer to the screen.

“I know those vendors.”

“You know the names,” Gabriel said. “You don’t know who owns them.”

The room went completely silent.

Gabriel selected one line.

HART STRATEGIC CONSULTING.

Vanessa stopped breathing.

He selected another.

VH DEVELOPMENT SERVICES.

Then another.

SILVER CREST ADVISORY.

Nico looked directly at her.

“All three trace back to the same beneficial owner.”

Adrian whispered:

“Don’t.”

Gabriel clicked.

Vanessa Hart’s name appeared.

Richard turned toward his son.

“Tell me that isn’t real.”

Adrian said nothing.

Vanessa stepped backward.

And Luca quietly said:

“Mr. Cole, before tonight is over, you may want to ask your son why more than eleven million dollars from your company passed through accounts connected to the woman standing beside him.”

Richard’s champagne glass slipped from his hand.

May you like

It shattered across the marble.

Nobody laughed.
