Chapter 6 - THE EMPTY HOUSE DOWN THE ROAD

The address belonged to a property Richard recognized immediately.
An old guesthouse beyond the north boundary of the estate.
Technically, it no longer belonged to the Coles.
Margaret had sold it eighteen months earlier.
“To who?” Luca asked.
She didn’t answer.
Richard laughed without humor.
“Let me guess.”
Vanessa whispered:
“Crown Meridian.”
Margaret finally looked ashamed.
Richard closed his eyes.
“So you sold family land to the company you secretly created with our son.”
“It was unused.”
“That isn’t the point.”
“It was mine to sell.”
“No. It belonged to the trust.”
Luca looked up.
That mattered.
“A trust asset?”
Richard nodded.
Margaret’s confidence cracked.
“If the transfer wasn’t properly approved,” Luca said, “Crown Meridian may not hold valid title.”
Adrian turned on his mother.
“You told me it was clean.”
“You signed everything.”
“You told me where to sign!”
For the first time, I saw Adrian as something other than my unfaithful husband.
Not innocent.
Never that.
But manipulated.
Margaret had spent years building him into exactly the kind of man she could control—entitled enough to believe rules didn’t apply to him, insecure enough to follow anyone promising him the power he thought he deserved.
And Stephen Wren had recognized it.
Dominic received a message.
“Police are on the way to the guesthouse.”
Richard looked at him.
“You called?”
“Nico did when the live transfer was detected.”
Good.
Nobody was playing hero.
Twenty minutes later, Detective Aaron Bishop from county financial crimes arrived at the estate.
He spoke privately with Gabriel and Luca.
Then with Richard.
Then he asked to see Adrian.
My husband looked at me as if I could help.
I didn’t.
He had wanted his place.
He could stand in it.
While Bishop interviewed him in Richard’s study, guests began leaving quietly.
No one wanted birthday cake anymore.
Some hugged me.
Some avoided my eyes.
Several people who had laughed when Adrian humiliated me suddenly wanted me to know they had always found his behavior “concerning.”
I learned something useful that night.
Public sympathy arrives quickly when power changes direction.
I didn’t need it.
Near midnight, only family, attorneys, investigators, and Vanessa remained.
My brothers stood around the dining table while Nico reviewed messages.
Then his phone rang.
He listened without speaking.
When he ended the call, Dominic asked:
“Well?”
Nico looked at me.
“The guesthouse was empty.”
Adrian had returned from his interview.
“What?”
“Recently occupied,” Nico continued. “Food. Electronics. Documents. But whoever was there left before police arrived.”
Richard asked:
“Any sign of Wren?”
“Blood.”
The room went still.
“How much?”
“Not enough to establish anything.”
“Recent?”
“Likely.”
Then Nico added:
“They found photographs.”
I didn’t like his tone.
“Of what?”
“You.”
My stomach tightened.
“Me?”
“Hundreds.”
Adrian looked up sharply.
Nico continued.
“Leaving work. Meeting your brothers. Visiting your father before he died. Shopping. Jogging.”
Dominic’s jaw hardened.
“How far back?”
“Ten years.”
My marriage was ten years old.
I slowly turned toward Adrian.
He looked genuinely horrified.
“I didn’t know.”
I believed that too.
That frightened me more.
The surveillance predated Vanessa.
Predated Crown Meridian.
Predated Richard’s succession plan.
Stephen Wren—or whoever had been using his identity—had been interested in me almost from the beginning.
“Why?” I whispered.
Nico looked uncomfortable.
“There was also a file labeled MORETTI.”
Dominic stepped closer.
“Our family?”
“Yes.”
“What was in it?”
“Corporate records. Your companies. Dad’s old businesses.”
Matteo frowned.
“Why?”
Nico didn’t answer.
Gabriel did.
“Because this was never only about Cole Dominion.”
He opened one of the photographs police had transmitted.
My father.
Antonio Moretti.
Taken twenty-three years earlier.
Standing outside Cole Dominion headquarters.
Beside him was Richard.
And between them stood a third man.
Stephen Wren.
On the back of the photograph, somebody had written:
ANTONIO KNOWS WHO REALLY OWNS IT.
Nobody spoke.
Richard stared at the words.
Then Dominic asked the question that changed the entire night.
“Richard, what exactly did our father discover twenty-two years ago?”
Richard slowly sat down.
May you like
And whispered:
“Something I promised him I would take to my grave.”
