Chapter 6 - The Dark Secret in the Trust

Richard backed away from the security guards, his teeth grinding together in desperate, cornered malice.
"This is a personal family matter!" Richard shouted, his voice echoing shrilly through the grand rotunda.
"Whatever happened in the past was a private financial decision made under immense business stress!"
"You cannot erase the fact that my late mother, Margaret Sterling, established a generational family trust that provided Sophia’s initial medical foundation!"
"I am the sole managing trustee of Margaret's estate, and under the terms of that trust, any professional patent generated using trust resources belongs to Sterling Capital!"
I pulled a second document from my leather portfolio—a certified probate transcript bearing the golden seal of the New York Surrogate's Court.
"I was hoping you would bring up Grandmother Margaret’s trust, Richard," I said calmly, stepping directly in front of him.
"Because two weeks ago, when my patent legal team conducted a routine asset audit, we subpoenaed the unredacted 2010 probate filings from Chase Manhattan Bank."
Evelyn gasped, clutching Richard’s forearm with trembling fingers as a look of sheer, unadulterated terror crossed her face.
"Sophia... please... there's no need to discuss private estate matters in public," Evelyn pleaded, her aristocratic veneer completely collapsing into pathetic desperation.
"Grandmother Margaret knew exactly what kind of greedy, narcissistic sociopath you were, Richard," I continued, projecting my voice so every microphone recorded every word.
"In 2010, when she was diagnosed with terminal cancer, she executed a specific codicil leaving a four-million-dollar designated medical endowment exclusively for my health and education."
"She named you as the fiduciary executor with strict instructions that the funds were never to be co-mingled with Sterling Capital."
"When I was diagnosed with leukemia at age twelve, that four-million-dollar trust was fully liquid and immediately available to cover every single cent of my treatment."
The crowd murmured in horrified realization as the depth of Richard's depravity was laid bare under the chandeliers.

"You didn't abandon me because chemotherapy was too expensive, Richard," I whispered, my eyes burning into his soul.
"You abandoned me and surrendered custody to the state so you could declare me legally deceased for estate purposes, allowing you to steal my four-million-dollar trust to fund your failing investment firm and Alyssa's fraudulent lifestyle."
