Chapter 5 - The Chief of Surgery

Before Richard could utter another fabricated excuse, the heavy oak doors of the VIP reception hall swung open with authoritative force.

Dr. Bennett, the legendary Chief of Pediatric Surgery and Chairman of the State Medical Licensing Board, walked into the center of the rotunda.

At seventy-four years old, Dr. Bennett was a titan of modern medicine, revered across the country for his surgical brilliance and uncompromising integrity.

He stopped directly in front of Richard Sterling, his sharp blue eyes narrowing beneath his bushy white eyebrows as memories from fourteen years ago flooded his mind.

"I wondered when you would have the audacity to show your face in this medical center again, Richard," Dr. Bennett said, his voice booming across the silent marble hall.

Richard attempted to straighten his posture, offering a weak, trembling hand toward the surgical legend.

"Dr. Bennett... an absolute honor... we were just discussing our family’s contribution to Sophia’s extraordinary medical education—"

Dr. Bennett did not take the offered hand; he kept his arms folded rigidly across his white coat, his expression carved from stone.

"Do not speak the word 'family' in this house of healing, you miserable coward," Dr. Bennett interrupted with biting, razor-sharp precision.

"I was the attending oncologist who sat in Conference Room C fourteen years ago when you were presented with Sophia’s treatment plan."

"I personally offered to waive my surgical fees so you could afford the hospital pharmacy co-pays."

"Do you remember what you told me, Richard?"

The entire gathering of doctors, donors, and journalists leaned forward in absolute, breathless silence.

Richard stood frozen, sweat beading along his receding hairline as his eyes darted toward the exit doors.

"You told me that eighty-five thousand dollars was too much to invest in a sick child when Alyssa needed a private equestrian trainer in the Hamptons," Dr. Bennett declared, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceiling.

"You threw your custody papers onto my desk like a dirty rag and warned me never to send another invoice to your Manhattan penthouse."

"Hannah Hayes worked double night shifts for seven years to ensure this brilliant young woman had every textbook, every meal, and every medication she needed to survive."

"You are not a father, Richard."

"You are a biological donor who abandoned his post, and you have no standing in this institution."

Two armed university security officers stepped forward at Dr. Bennett's signal, their hands resting firmly on their utility belts.
