Chapter 12 - The Eviction & Foreclosure

Three weeks after the commencement ceremony, the morning sun rose over the opulent gated community of Meadowbrook Estates in Greenwich, Connecticut.
A convoy of four federal marshal transport vans and two heavy commercial moving trucks pulled up to the circular driveway of the Sterling family's twenty-million-dollar Georgian mansion.
United States Marshals, armed with federal asset forfeiture execution orders, posted bright yellow seizure notices across the towering mahogany front doors.
Neighbors in tennis whites and silk robes gathered along the manicured hedges, watching with fascinated shock as decades of stolen luxury were dismantled.
Inside the grand foyer, Evelyn sat on a single wooden crate, clutching a worn leather handbag as federal agents systematically inventoried her designer shoe collections, oil paintings, and antique crystal chandeliers.
Richard was nowhere to be seen, remaining locked in a maximum-security holding cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Lower Manhattan after being denied bail as a flight risk.
"You cannot take my grandmother's silver service!" Evelyn shrieked at the lead federal marshal, her voice cracking with bitter, impotent fury.
"That silver has been in the Montgomery-Sterling bloodline for over four generations!"
Special Agent Miller stepped into the foyer, holding an official court-ordered liquidation manifest signed by the Chief District Judge.
"Mrs. Sterling, every single item inside this residence was purchased with funds laundered through the stolen Margaret Sterling Medical Trust," Agent Miller stated with cold, unyielding authority.
"Under Title 18 of the United States Code, all real property, personal assets, bank accounts, and luxury vehicles are subject to immediate federal forfeiture to satisfy the four-point-two-million-dollar restitution judgment plus statutory interest."
"You have precisely fifteen minutes to vacate the premises with one suitcase containing basic personal clothing."
"If you remain on this property past eleven o'clock, you will be arrested for criminal trespassing on federal property."
Two female marshals escorted Evelyn down the sweeping marble staircase toward the front gates, where a standard yellow city taxicab was waiting.

She looked back at the towering estate—the grand ballroom where she had hosted lavish charity galas while her youngest daughter fought for breath in an isolation ward.
The iron gates swung shut with a heavy, final clang, locking her out of the world of stolen privilege forever.
