Chapter 3 - The VIP Ambush

The standing ovation lasted for six straight minutes as faculty members, hospital executives, and fellow graduates cheered with tears streaming down their faces.

When the formal ceremony concluded, the graduates filed out into the sun-drenched marble rotunda for the commencement reception.

Dozens of chief medical officers and pharmaceutical directors surrounded me, offering congratulations on my appointment as Chief Fellow of Pediatric Oncology.

Hannah stood proudly beside me, holding a vibrant bouquet of yellow sunflowers that my fellow residents had pooled their money to buy for her.

Suddenly, the crowd of well-wishers parted as Richard Sterling shoved his way through the circle of doctors, his face mottled with purple rage.

Evelyn followed closely behind him, her eyes wild with aristocratic indignation, while Alyssa dragged her heels, furiously texting on her phone.

"How dare you humiliate this family in front of the entire international medical board!" Richard bellowed, his voice vibrating with venom.

Several hospital board members immediately stiffened, stepping closer to form a protective perimeter around Hannah and me.

"You sat on that stage and slandered your own father after we gave you the genetic foundation to achieve this honor!" Richard snarled, jabbing a manicured finger toward my chest.

"We took time out of our executive schedules to support you today, and you disgraced the Sterling name before thousands of investors!"

I looked at him with an expression of calm, clinical detachment, feeling neither fear nor anger—only profound pity for a hollow, narcissistic parasite.

"You didn't come here to support me, Richard," I said, my voice cutting through his theatrical outrage like a scalpel.

"You came because the Wall Street Journal published an article yesterday about my team’s breakthrough patent in targeted pediatric CAR-T cell therapy.

You saw the ten-million-dollar clinical research endowment attached to my name, and you thought you could claim ownership of a daughter you threw away like medical waste."

Evelyn stepped forward, her painted lips trembling with venomous entitlement.

"We are your biological parents, Sophia! Under state probate and family law, biological heirs owe fiduciary loyalty to the estate that brought them into this world!"

Hannah stepped forward, placing herself squarely between Evelyn and me, her gentle nurse's posture hardening into an unbreakable iron shield.

"You surrendered all parental rights on November 14th, 2012, Mrs. Sterling," Hannah spoke with quiet, absolute authority.

"The only thing Sophia owes you is the dust on her shoes as she walks away from your rot."
