Chapter 9 - The Unborn Heir

The trust agreement had been drafted eleven years earlier, when I was barely old enough to understand the difference between voting shares and ordinary stock.
My mother had established a special provision: if I had a child, that child would eventually receive an independent voting interest protected from outside claims.
Until the child reached adulthood, I would serve as guardian.
No husband, sibling, or board member could seize that authority without proving I was legally incapable of fulfilling my duties.
Daniel's challenge suddenly made sense.
He wasn't trying to inherit the company for himself.
He wanted control of the voting rights attached to my child's future.
“Why didn't you tell me?” I asked Arthur.
“Your mother believed the clause would remain dormant unless someone tried to steal the trust.”
“And you knew Daniel was involved?”
“I suspected him. I never had proof.”
I studied his face, remembering the photograph and the ring.
“Were you involved with my mother?”
Arthur looked startled.
“Professionally, yes. Nothing more. The man in that photograph was Victor Hale, your father's former business partner.”
The name meant nothing to me.
Arthur continued. “Victor disappeared shortly before your father died. Daniel's birth records were altered around the same time.”
I called Margaret.
Within an hour, she uncovered a connection: Victor Hale had founded a private investment company that later became one of the hidden beneficiaries of the disputed transfers.
And Ethan had signed contracts with that company.
Every piece led back to the same man.
Before we could investigate further, my phone rang.
Ethan.
“I want to talk,” he said.
“You've had three years to talk.”
“Claire, I made mistakes.”
“You called me ugly in front of an entire ballroom.”
“I was angry.”
“You held another woman while humiliating your pregnant wife.”
Silence.
Then he said, “Daniel told me the company was going to collapse. He promised to protect us.”
“Protect you from what?”
“Victor Hale.”
My blood ran cold.
Ethan explained that Victor had financed Daniel's legal campaign and threatened to expose Ethan's financial crimes if he refused to cooperate.
“Where is Victor now?” I asked.
“I don't know. But he sent me something this morning.”
A message arrived on my phone.
It was a photograph of my hospital registration form.
