Chapter 5 - My Mother's Final Warning

My hands trembled as I opened the envelope.

Inside was a letter dated three months before my mother's death, along with a small brass key and a photograph of a storage facility outside Chicago.

My dearest Claire, the letter began, if you are reading this while carrying a child, then the danger I feared has finally reached you.

I stopped breathing for a moment.

My mother had known.

She had known someone might come after the trust, the company, and eventually the child who would inherit my responsibilities.

The letter explained that my father had discovered a secret financial arrangement involving several executives. Before he could expose it, he died in what authorities had classified as a sudden medical emergency.

My mother never accepted that explanation.

She had collected evidence, hidden it in a private archive, and created a legal safeguard that would protect my inheritance if anyone attempted to challenge it.

But the final paragraph frightened me most.

Trust no one who tells you that your father died peacefully. And if Daniel comes to you claiming he wants only what is fair, remember that fairness was never what he wanted.

I folded the letter carefully.

Across the room, Daniel entered the ballroom.

He wore a charcoal suit, carried himself with practiced confidence, and smiled at the cameras as though he had arrived to rescue the evening.

“Claire,” he said, kissing the air beside my cheek. “I wish we were meeting under better circumstances.”

“You filed a petition challenging my inheritance.”

“I filed a petition challenging a questionable will.”

“You submitted a letter my mother never wrote.”

His smile tightened.

“Be careful. Pregnancy can make emotions overwhelming.”

Ethan, sensing a possible ally, moved toward him.

For one terrible second, the two men exchanged a look that told me more than either intended.

They had planned this together.

Then Daniel glanced at my belly and lowered his voice.

“You should leave the company alone, Claire. Some inheritances cost more than they're worth.”

He walked away before I could respond.

My phone buzzed.
