Chapter 13 - The Husband Who Finally Told the Truth

Ethan was arrested at the airport before his plane could take off.

He had been carrying a passport, cash, and a sealed envelope addressed to Victor Hale. Inside were copies of the disputed financial records and a letter promising to surrender the company's voting rights in exchange for protection.

When Margaret told me, I closed my eyes.

Even after everything, Ethan had chosen himself again.

But this time, he couldn't talk his way out.

During questioning, he admitted to authorizing fraudulent transfers, hiding payments to Vanessa, and helping Daniel obtain confidential trust documents. He also confessed that he had known Victor intended to challenge my inheritance long before the promotion ceremony.

He had kept quiet because Victor promised him control of a new division.

The promotion had never been a reward.

It had been payment.

Vanessa cooperated with investigators, providing messages and recordings that connected Daniel to Victor's financial network. She accepted responsibility for her own actions and agreed to testify.

Daniel tried to flee the country, but police intercepted him after discovering a series of forged legal documents in his possession.

The evidence was finally strong enough to bring Victor into the open.

He was arrested at a private estate two days later.

For the first time in months, I could breathe.

Grace was gaining weight in the neonatal unit, and the doctors expected her to come home soon.

Then Ethan requested one final meeting.

I agreed to speak with him through my attorney.

He appeared on the video screen wearing an orange detention uniform, his face hollow and his eyes exhausted.

“I know I don't deserve forgiveness,” he said.

“No,” I replied. “You don't.”

He swallowed.

“But there is something I need you to know. Victor told me why he wanted Grace's voting rights. He wasn't planning to sell the company.”

“Then what?”

“He wanted to use the company to finance a political network. Your father's original contracts contained information that could expose people who have spent decades hiding their involvement.”

I leaned forward.

“Names?”

Ethan shook his head.

“Victor kept a separate ledger. He told me it was the only document that could destroy everyone involved.”

“Where is it?”

His eyes shifted toward the door.

“I don't know. But Daniel does.”

The connection ended.

Minutes later, Margaret received a call from the police.

Daniel had agreed to reveal the ledger's location.

In exchange, he wanted to speak to me alone.
