Chapter 7 - Three Knocks After Midnight

Margaret had insisted I install a security system months earlier. That night, it was the only reason I had time to act.

I guided Vanessa into the study, locked the inner door, and triggered the silent alarm.

The man outside knocked again.

“Mrs. Caldwell, don't make this difficult.”

I recognized his voice.

Frank Mercer, Daniel's longtime security chief.

I called the police while Vanessa opened the memory card on my encrypted laptop. A list of audio files appeared, most labeled with dates from eleven years earlier.

One file had no title.

Vanessa pressed play.

A man's voice filled the study.

“Once the old man is gone, the voting shares become complicated. We need the daughter under control before she understands what her mother arranged.”

Another voice answered.

Daniel.

“And the wife?”

“She knows nothing. She'll sign whatever we put in front of her.”

I felt sick.

The recording continued, revealing discussions about falsified medical records, hidden accounts, and a private meeting scheduled hours before my father's death.

Then the first voice said something that made Vanessa cover her mouth.

“What about the boy?”

Daniel answered, “He's mine. I'll deal with him.”

The recording ended.

I replayed the final seconds.

The boy.

Daniel had been twenty-one when my father died. I had been eighteen. Our family had always claimed Daniel was my mother's child from a brief relationship after my parents separated.

But the recording suggested something much darker.

A pounding sound came from the front door.

The police sirens were still several minutes away.

Vanessa looked at me with tears in her eyes.

“There's a second recording. I haven't listened to it.”

“Play it.”

She hesitated, then opened another file.

My father's voice emerged, weak but unmistakable.

“Claire, if anything happens to me, your mother must never tell you the truth about Daniel.”

I stopped breathing.

Then my father's voice continued.

“Because the truth is that he isn't your brother.”

The file crackled.

And a final voice, one I recognized instantly, whispered:

“Then neither of you can ever find out who his real father is.”
