Chapter 6 - THE WOMAN JULIAN HID

Julian did know where Camille was.

That fact nearly ended our eleven-hour marriage.

“She’s alive?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“Safe house in Connecticut.”

I stared.

“You let me think she was kidnapped.”

“I thought she had been at first.”

“And when did you find out otherwise?”

“Twenty minutes ago.”

“You could have told me.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you?”

“Because she asked me not to.”

I laughed bitterly.

“Excellent. Another man deciding which information women can handle.”

His face tightened.

“That’s fair.”

The answer stopped me.

He continued.

“Camille contacted Marcus after we left Queens. She ran because Victor threatened her.”

“Why?”

“She found the trust amendment.”

“And?”

“She also found evidence against Sebastian.”

My stomach tightened.

“What evidence?”

“That he’s been working with Victor.”

Julian went still when he said it.

His cousin.

His rival.

The man who had shown us the fraud clause.

I remembered Sebastian’s helpful explanations.

Too helpful.

“Why would Sebastian expose Victor?”

“To gain my trust.”

“Then take the company?”

“Yes.”

Julian called Camille on secure video.

She appeared bruised but alive.

“Lena.”

“You know me.”

“I researched you.”

“Why?”

“Because Victor did.”

I crossed my arms.

“What did you find?”

“That your father built the safeguard.”

“And Sebastian?”

Her expression hardened.

“He and Victor have been moving trust assets through shell companies for years.”

Julian looked furious.

“Proof?”

“I have it.”

“Send it.”

“Already did.”

Marcus opened a file.

Transactions.

Sebastian-linked holdings.

Trust distributions.

Offshore transfers.

Millions.

Julian’s jaw tightened.

Camille continued.

“Victor needed you married before midnight because otherwise Sebastian’s temporary control would expose the theft during automatic review.”

I frowned.

“So the marriage actually hurts them?”

“Yes.”

“Then why set me up?”

“Because with Lena as spouse and key holder, they could force the override and rewrite ownership before review.”

There it was.

The plan.

Use Julian’s desperation.

Use my mother.

Use my father’s old safeguard.

Then erase everything.

I looked at Julian.

“We go to the tower.”

“No.”

“My mother is there.”

“I know.”

“You don’t get to decide.”

He breathed.

Then nodded.

“Together.”

That word again.

We went with federal agents Camille had already contacted.

But Victor had planned for that too.

The forty-fifth floor was empty.

Except for one conference room.

My mother sat inside.

Unrestrained.

I ran to her.

“Mom.”

She hugged me.

Then whispered:

“He left ten minutes ago.”

Julian looked around.

“Why?”

Mom’s face changed.

“Because he got what he wanted.”

“What?”

She pointed toward the wall screen.

The trust system was open.

Override initiated.

Designated holder verified.

I stared.

“How?”

Mom’s voice broke.

“He used your old medical records.”

“What?”

“Biometric files from when you were a child.”

My father had apparently stored fingerprint and retinal data in the original system.

Victor had copied it.

Julian moved toward the console.

“Can we stop it?”

Marcus checked.

“Not without the phrase.”

“What phrase?”

Mom looked at me.

“Your father’s.”

I stared.

“I don’t know it.”

She started crying.

“Yes, you do.”

“When?”

“Every night when you were little.”

My chest tightened.

Dad used to say one sentence before turning off my bedroom light.

Nothing worth protecting should require you to disappear.

I typed it.

The system paused.

Then requested:

SECOND AUTHORIZATION: SPOUSE.

Julian placed his hand on the scanner.

Override canceled.

For one second, relief hit.

Then a new window opened.

AUDIT RELEASE INITIATED.

Hundreds of files appeared.

Victor’s transfers.

Sebastian’s accounts.

Trust fraud.

And one file labeled:

RAFAEL MORALES - DEATH AUTHORIZATION.

My mother gasped.

Julian opened it.

Authorized by:

Victor Vale.

May you like

Approved by:

Sebastian Vale.
