Chapter 4 - THE MAN WHO CAME FOR MY MOTHER

We reached Queens in seventeen minutes.
Julian drove himself.
Apparently billionaires ignore traffic laws when angry.
His security team arrived seconds behind us.
My mother’s apartment door was open.
My entire body went cold.
“Mom?”
No answer.
Julian caught my arm before I ran inside.
I yanked away.
“Don’t.”
He released me immediately.
Security entered first.
The apartment was empty.
No blood.
No body.
That should have helped.
It didn’t.
Her medication bag was gone.
So was her coat.
Julian’s security chief, Marcus Hale, found a broken lamp.
“Possible struggle.”
I closed my eyes.
Then noticed something on the kitchen table.
A yellow legal pad.
Mom’s handwriting.
Only three words:
ASK ABOUT VICTOR.
Julian stared.
“My uncle.”
“What does he want with her?”
“I don’t know.”
“You keep saying that.”
“I know.”
I hated that he sounded honest.
Marcus found a hidden folder taped behind a cabinet.
Inside were old Vale documents.
My mother had kept them for fifteen years.
I opened the first.
Security audit.
Signed by Rafael Morales.
He had documented unauthorized changes to the trust system.
Another page contained handwritten notes.
V.V. demanded backdoor access. Refused.
Victor Vale.
Then:
If anything happens to me, Elena has copies.
My mother.
Elena Morales.
I stared.
Julian read over my shoulder.
“She kept the evidence.”
“Yes.”
“And Victor knows.”
My stomach twisted.
“Why wait fifteen years?”
Julian looked at the marriage contract in his hand.
“Because tonight made the trust active.”
The pieces moved.
Dad found the manipulation.
Mom kept proof.
Then I randomly became Julian’s emergency wife hours before the trust shifted.
Not random.
Camille had said that.
I looked at Julian.
“Did someone arrange for me to be working tonight?”
He frowned.
“You were scheduled.”
“I swapped shifts.”
“With who?”
“Karla.”
“Why?”
“She said her son was sick.”
Marcus was already calling facilities.
He returned two minutes later.
“There is no Karla on tonight’s cleaning roster.”
I went cold.
“What?”
“The shift swap was processed by an external manager.”
“Name.”
He looked at Julian.
“Dover Staffing.”
I knew the company.
They had hired me three months earlier.
Julian’s face changed.
“Dover is owned by a Vale subsidiary.”
I stared.
“You own my cleaning company?”
“Indirectly.”
“Did you know?”
“No.”
I believed him.
Barely.
Then Marcus opened the staffing records.
Someone had specifically assigned me to executive-floor nights six weeks earlier.
Authorization initials:
V.V.
Victor Vale.
I felt sick.
“He put me in your building.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Julian’s voice dropped.
“To make sure you were available tonight.”
My phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
A photograph arrived.
My mother sitting in a chair.
Alive.
Terrified.
Beside her stood an older man in a gray suit.
Victor Vale.
Message:
BRING THE MARRIAGE CONTRACT AND THE GIRL.
May you like
Then another line appeared.
RAFAEL HID THE FINAL KEY INSIDE HER.
