Chapter 5 - THE KEY INSIDE MY NAME

I read the message three times.
Inside her.
“What does that mean?”
Julian looked at Marcus.
Marcus shook his head.
“No idea.”
My mother’s medical records suddenly flashed through my mind.
Surgeries.
Scans.
Her current illness.
I felt nauseated.
“Could he mean something implanted?”
Julian’s face hardened.
“We are not assuming that.”
Good.
For once, I appreciated his tone.
Then Marcus found something.
My birth certificate.
Not the paper copy.
A database anomaly.
My middle name had been legally changed when I was one year old.
I had never known.
Original:
Lena Sofia Morales.
Current:
Lena Rafael Morales.
I stared.
“My middle name is Rafael.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Marcus searched the filing.
Change requested by my father.
Attached note:
KEY HOLDER DESIGNATION.
The room went silent.
Julian looked at me.
“The key isn’t inside your body.”
I understood.
“It’s inside my identity.”
My father had encoded something using my legal name.
Marcus found Rafael’s old encryption documentation.
The Vale trust required three elements for final trustee override.
Biometric identity.
Original key phrase.
Designated holder.
Julian looked at the records.
“You are the designated holder.”
I laughed nervously.
“For what?”
“The override.”
“So I can change the trust?”
“Potentially.”
“Why would my father give that to a baby?”
“Because a child couldn’t knowingly betray him.”
That sounded like Dad.
Too clever and too sad.
Then Julian’s attorney called.
She had verified the fraud clause.
It was real.
Our marriage could be challenged because of the six-hundred-thousand-dollar payment.
I looked at Julian.
“So even if we rescue Mom, Sebastian could take the company.”
“Unless the trust override invalidates the amendment.”
I stared.
“You need me twice.”
His expression changed.
“Yes.”
“For the marriage and the key.”
“Yes.”
“Convenient.”
“I didn’t know.”
“I know.”
That was becoming irritating.
Because believing him was making anger harder.
Then his attorney said:
“There’s more.”
Of course.
“What?”
“The original marriage clause includes an exemption.”
Julian frowned.
“What exemption?”
“If the spouse entered the marriage with a material nonfinancial interest in the trust outcome.”
I stared.
“What does that mean?”
She answered:
“If Lena is the designated key holder, the payment does not automatically invalidate the marriage.”
Julian looked at me.
“So Victor didn’t only bring you here to manipulate me.”
“No.”
“He needed me to marry you so the override would activate.”
The entire room went quiet.
Victor had engineered both sides.
He needed the marriage.
He needed me near Julian.
He needed the trust activated before he could force the key.
Then my phone rang again.
Victor.
I answered.
“My mother.”
“She’s alive.”
“I want to hear her.”
A pause.
Then Mom’s voice.
“Lena.”
I nearly cried.
“I’m here.”
“Don’t give him anything.”
Victor took the phone.
“You see? Difficult women run in the family.”
My jaw tightened.
“What do you want?”
“Midtown Vale Tower. Forty-fifth floor. One hour.”
Julian mouthed:
No.
I ignored him.
Victor continued.
“Bring Julian.”
“Why?”
“Because the override requires both of you.”
Then he added:
“And Lena?”
“Yes?”
“Ask your new husband what happened to Camille.”
The call ended.
I looked at Julian.
His face had changed.
“What?”
He said nothing.
“Julian.”
He looked away.
May you like
I felt cold.
“You know where Camille is.”
