Chapter 5 - The Corporate Retaliation

When Ethan returned to the Grand Regent at 11:45 AM, the atmosphere had shifted from nervous anticipation to palpable tension.
As he stepped into the executive conference room on the third floor, he found Marcus Sterling already there. Marcus was pacing the room, his expensive tailored suit immaculate, his silver hair perfectly styled. Beside him sat Robert Sterling, looking disheveled but smug, flanked by two high-priced corporate defense attorneys.
Lupita was seated at the far end of the long mahogany table, looking calm but isolated. Beside her was Sarah Jenkins, the lead independent auditor Ethan had brought in.
"Ethan!" Marcus spread his arms wide, adopting his standard boardroom persona. "Thank god you're back. Look, we need to stop this madness before it leaks to the press. I've had my legal team review the situation. Robert admitting to a minor technical glitch on a booking shouldn't result in a public execution. We can handle this quietly with an internal transfer."
Ethan walked to the head of the table, not offering to shake anyone's hand. He remained standing, his hands resting flat on the polished wood.
"Sit down, Marcus," Ethan said quietly.
Marcus frowned, his smile faltering. "Ethan, let's be professional—"
"I said, sit down."
The sheer authority in Ethan’s voice compelled Marcus to take a seat, his expression darkening.
Ethan turned to the lead auditor. "Sarah, please present the preliminary findings from the past four hours of data recovery."
Sarah Jenkins opened a thick ledger and tapped her laptop screen, projecting a massive spreadsheet onto the wall.

"Over the past thirty-six months," Sarah explained clearly, "the Grand Regent Chicago has systematically written off over $1.7 million in premium food, beverage, and luxury accommodations as 'operational marketing expenses.' However, these events were never authorized by the corporate board. Furthermore, the login credentials used to approve these write-offs belong exclusively to General Manager Robert Sterling and Senior VP Marcus Sterling."
Robert’s face drained of color, but one of his attorneys immediately jumped up.
"This is purely circumstantial digital tracking," the lawyer argued. "Corporate executives have discretionary spending allowances for client acquisition. This doesn't prove any criminal intent or personal enrichment."
Lupita stood up calmly, placing her old, cracked smartphone on the center of the table.
"It isn't just digital tracking, sir," Lupita said, looking the high-priced attorney directly in the eye. "Inside this phone are photographic records of the physical delivery logs. Every Thursday night for two years, private catering vans from a company owned by Robert Sterling’s brother-in-law arrived at the loading dock. They loaded cases of vintage wine and imported meat that were marked as 'spoiled' in our internal inventory. I have the signed manifests."
Marcus slammed his hand on the table. "This is absurd! You're going to take the word of a disgruntled maid over a senior executive who helped build this company's profit margins?"
"She is not a maid, Marcus," Ethan intercepted, his voice deadly quiet. "She is the only person in this building who acted with a shred of integrity. And as of ten minutes ago, her title is Corporate Integrity Consultant for Vance Hospitality Group."
Marcus let out a harsh, mocking laugh. "You're losing your mind, Ethan. You're giving a housekeeper a corporate title? Let's talk about the real world. If you fire me and you fire Robert, I will pull the entire Midwest management team out of this company by tonight. Half of the regional directors are loyal to me. We will walk out, we will go to the press, and we will tell them that the CEO of Vance Hospitality has suffered a mental breakdown since his wife died and is destroying his own company."
The room went completely silent. Robert smiled maliciously, believing Marcus had successfully backed Ethan into a corner.
Ethan didn't flinch. He leaned forward, looking directly at Marcus.
"Do you think I didn't anticipate that, Marcus?" Ethan reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a sleek, black flash drive, tossing it onto the table. "That drive contains the complete transcription of the phone call you made to me at 8:45 AM this morning. The call where you attempted to blackmail me using my late wife's memory, and where you admitted to knowing about the situation in Chicago before you even landed."
Marcus’s confidence evaporated. His eyes widened as he looked at the small piece of plastic on the table.
"Furthermore," Ethan continued, "the independent auditors have already forwarded these financial discrepancies to the Federal Bureau of Investigation's corporate fraud division. They are tracking the wire transfers between your private offshore account and Robert's catering shell company. By tomorrow morning, this won't be a corporate HR dispute, Marcus. It will be a federal indictment."
The two defense attorneys looked at each other, then slowly closed their briefcases. One of them turned to Robert. "We are terminating our representation regarding corporate mediation. We suggest you retain criminal defense counsel immediately."
Robert looked at Marcus, his voice trembling. "Marcus... you said we were safe. You said Ethan was too distracted in Denver to ever look at the logs!"
Marcus didn't answer. He sat frozen, staring at Ethan with a mixture of profound shock and total defeat.
"Security," Ethan called out.
The heavy doors opened, and four uniform officers from the independent security firm stepped into the room.
"Escort Mr. Marcus Sterling and Mr. Robert Sterling off the premises," Ethan commanded. "They are permanently barred from all Vance Hospitality properties worldwide. If they attempt to access any digital network, notify the authorities immediately."
As the security guards took Marcus and Robert by the arms, leading them out of the room, Marcus turned back, his face twisted in anger. "This isn't over, Ethan! You can't run this region alone! You'll drown!"

Ethan didn't even look up as the doors slammed shut. He turned to Lupita and Sarah.
"Let's get to work," Ethan said. "We have an empire to restructure."
