Chapter 19 - The Demolition of Sub-Level 4

Three months after the sentencing, a massive structural renovation took place beneath the Grand Regent Hotel.

Ethan did not simply wall off the dark sub-basement where the vault and secret elevator had sat for thirty years.

Under his direct orders, heavy industrial construction teams were brought in.

Over a period of three weeks, specialized crews completely dismantled Sub-Level 4, tearing out the iron vault doors, crushing the secret elevator shaft into rubble, and removing every brick that bore the toxic memory of the Vance family.

In its place, master architects constructed the Eleanor Vance Children’s Art & Learning Pavilion.

The new subterranean sanctuary was a breathtaking, light-filled space featuring high vaulted ceilings, warm oak floors, interactive digital art easels, a children's library, and an open-air indoor garden illuminated by massive glass skylights extending up to the hotel's central courtyard.

On a warm, golden Saturday afternoon in early September, the official dedication ceremony was taking place inside the new pavilion.

Dozens of hotel staff members, their families, local community leaders, Detective Maria Ortiz, and Marcus Vance gathered around long cedar tables decorated with fresh white lilies and sunflowers.

Five-year-old Lily was running happily across the polished oak floor, showing a group of young children how to draw bunnies on the digital easels, her joyful laughter echoing through the light-filled room.

Maya stood near the pastry display, serving slices of a magnificent seven-tier vanilla bean cake decorated with edible sugar lilies.

Lupita stood near the central indoor garden fountain wearing an elegant cream wool dress, holding a warm cup of coffee, her face glowing with vibrant health, profound peace, and quiet happiness.

Ethan walked up beside her, wrapping his arm gently around her waist.

"Look at this room, Lupita," Ethan said softly, a warm smile gracing his lips.

"It used to be a dark vault full of secrets and fear."

"Now it's full of light and children's laughter."

Lupita leaned her head against his shoulder, squeezing his hand.

"You didn't just rebuild a hotel, Ethan," Lupita whispered.

"You healed a family."

Arthur Pendelton walked over, holding two glasses of sparkling cider.

"Ethan, Lupita," Arthur smiled warmly, handing them the glasses.

"The quarterly performance reports came in this morning."

"The Grand Regent has achieved a ninety-eight percent occupancy rate for the upcoming winter season—the highest in the city’s history."

"And our employee retention program was named the national gold standard by the Hospitality Workers Guild."

Ethan raised his glass, looking around the vibrant, happy room.

"To Eleanor," Ethan toasted gently.

"And to the home we built together."

"To Eleanor!" everyone cheered in unison, clinking their glasses together under the golden skylights.
