Chapter 13 - The Poisoned Legacy

The room descended into a heavy, razor-sharp silence as Victor Sterling walked up to the conference table.

He pulled a red-stamped judicial notice from his coat and laid it flat on the mahogany surface, right beside Detective Ortiz's tablet.

"This is an Emergency Restraining Order and a Motion for Corporate Receivership issued two hours ago by the Cook County Chancery Court," Victor announced in a clear, booming voice.

"As sole managing member of Apex Heritage Holdings, I am executing Section 12 of the Vance Family Trust."

"As of 8:00 AM today, Ethan Vance’s executive authority over the Grand Regent Hotel is suspended pending a complete forensic audit."

Ethan didn't flinch.

He didn't jump up or shout.

He stood up slowly, buttoning his dark suit jacket, staring directly into Victor Sterling’s pale gray eyes.

"You're thirty minutes too late, Victor," Ethan said, his voice dropping into an absolute, razor-sharp register.

"We unsealed the vault on Sub-Level 4 at three o'clock this morning."

Victor’s confident smile wavered for a fraction of a second, his jaw tightening almost imperceptibly.

"The vault is private corporate property," Victor sneered.

"Anything recovered from that basement without a civil warrant is legally inadmissible."

"It wasn't a civil search, Mr. Sterling," Detective Ortiz stated coldly, standing up and displaying her official police shield.

"It was an active criminal homicide investigation."

Victor let out a dry, arrogant laugh.

"Homicide? Eleanor Vance died of natural cardiac arrhythmia eighteen months ago."

"Her medical files were signed by Chief Pathologist Dr. Arthur Sterling."

"Dr. Sterling was arrested forty-five minutes ago at O'Hare International Airport while attempting to board a flight to Zurich," Detective Ortiz revealed flatly.

The color drained from Victor Sterling’s face so fast he looked like a ghost standing in the morning sunlight.

Detective Ortiz tapped her tablet, illuminating the screen with a series of high-contrast spectrographic blood charts provided by Johns Hopkins Pathology Department.

"When we exhumed Eleanor’s archived tissue samples three days ago under a confidential federal order," Ortiz explained, "we discovered high concentrations of Phytolaccine-B combined with synthetic central nervous system depressants."

"It's an odorless, undetectable botanical neurotoxin," Ethan added, taking a step closer to Victor.

"In small daily doses, it causes severe vascular inflammation, chronic fatigue, and mimics natural cardiac failure."

"You didn't just forge prenuptial agreements, Victor."

"You and your father systematically poisoned my wife inside Room 408 for six months."

Victor took a fast step backward toward his security guards, his hands trembling slightly.

"This is a slanderous conspiracy!" Victor shrieked, his polished composure crumbling into frantic panic.

"My lawyers will have this entire department sued by noon!"

"Your lawyers are currently being served with federal RICO search warrants at your corporate headquarters in Loop, Mr. Sterling," Marcus Vance interjected smoothly.

"Now step away from the table before officers assist you."
