Chapter 8 - THE BILLIONAIRE'S OLDEST BETRAYAL

Richard Hale had been Noah Whitman's business partner for fourteen years.

They'd built investment companies together.

Purchased buildings.

Funded technology startups.

And turned a small private fund into an empire worth billions.

Then, four years earlier, Noah discovered that Richard had been hiding financial losses and making unauthorized transfers.

Their partnership ended in a bitter legal dispute.

Richard disappeared from the public spotlight.

Noah rebuilt his company.

And everyone assumed the story was over.

Now Richard's daughter was involved with my husband.

And a company tied to her had transferred millions using forged authorizations.

I sat across from Noah in the conference room, trying to understand how my broken marriage had become connected to his former partner.

"Did you know Vanessa was involved with Ryan?"

"No."

"Did you know Ryan?"

"Only his company."

I looked at him carefully.

"Then why were you on my flight?"

He paused.

"Business."

"What business?"

"I was meeting an investor in Austin."

I studied his face.

For the first time, I wondered whether our meeting on the plane had been as accidental as it seemed.

Noah noticed.

"You think I arranged it."

I hesitated.

"Did you?"

"No."

His answer was immediate.

I wanted to believe him.

But Ryan had taught me how convincing a liar could sound.

Noah leaned back.

"Emily, I can't prove a negative. But I can show you my travel records, the original meeting invitation, and the ticket purchase date."

I looked down.

He wasn't offended.

He understood.

And that somehow made me want to cry.

"Why are you helping me?" I asked.

Noah considered the question.

Then looked toward Lily.

"Because the first thing I saw when you boarded that plane was a mother trying to keep her daughter comfortable while everyone else complained."

I swallowed.

"And?"

"And because when you thought I was just another passenger, you treated me like a person."

His expression softened.

"You laughed at my terrible napkin rabbit."

I almost smiled.

"It was terrible."

He grinned.

"It was excellent."

For a moment, the tension eased.

Then Rebecca entered with another report.

The investigators had traced several payments from Meridian Capital.

One went to Richard Hale.

Another to Vanessa.

A third to Ryan.

But the fourth was different.

It had been transferred to a private account in the name of someone I knew.

My stomach dropped.

"Who?"

Rebecca turned the document toward me.

Sarah Mitchell.

My best friend.

The woman who'd offered Lily and me a place to stay.

I stared.

"That's impossible."

Noah looked toward Rebecca.

"Are you certain?"

"The account details match her name and date of birth, but ownership still needs verification."

I stood.

"No."

My voice shook.

"Sarah would never betray me."

Then I remembered something.

Sarah had admitted Ryan offered her ten thousand dollars.

She'd said she refused.

But now a payment in her name appeared in the financial records.

I looked toward the door.

Sarah was standing there.

Her face was white.

May you like

And before I could speak, she whispered:

"Emily, I can explain."
