Chapter 4 - THE FATHER WHO CALLED ME A KIDNAPPER

Ryan had changed the locks.

He'd cut off my access to household money.

He'd moved another woman into his social life while I struggled to buy diapers.

And now he was claiming I'd kidnapped our daughter.

I stood in the airport consultation room holding Lily, feeling as though the floor might disappear beneath me.

"I didn't kidnap her."

The officer nodded.

"Ms. Collins, we're reviewing the documents. A parent's allegation doesn't automatically establish a crime."

I swallowed.

"Ryan knew I was leaving."

"Do you have evidence?"

I opened our text messages.

There it was.

I'm taking Lily to Chicago for a while. Sarah says we can stay with her.

Ryan's reply had been short.

Do whatever you want.

I showed the officer.

He documented the message.

Then asked whether any custody orders existed.

Again, I said no.

He explained that interstate family disputes could involve complicated legal questions and recommended speaking with a family-law attorney immediately.

Noah quietly offered to connect me with one.

I looked at him.

"I can't afford a billionaire's attorney."

He smiled faintly.

"You don't need to hire mine."

Rebecca mentioned a local legal-aid organization that could evaluate my situation independently.

That mattered.

I didn't want to escape Ryan only to become dependent on another powerful man.

An hour later, the officer confirmed there was no active order requiring me to surrender Lily at the airport.

I nearly cried with relief.

But the fear remained.

Ryan had lied.

Deliberately.

And someone had paid an investigator to wait for me.

The next afternoon, I met with a family-law attorney named Jennifer Brooks.

She listened carefully as I described the marriage.

The changed locks.

The inaccessible account.

The financial documents.

Ryan's relationship with another woman.

And his attempt to portray my departure as an abduction.

Jennifer took notes.

Then looked at me.

"Emily, we need to protect your legal position. We'll coordinate with counsel in Texas because that's where Lily has been living."

I nodded.

"What should I do?"

"Preserve every message. Don't delete anything. Don't respond to threats impulsively. And let us address the custody issue through proper channels."

I agreed.

Then she asked whether Ryan had ever threatened to take Lily away.

I hesitated.

"Not directly."

"Indirectly?"

I remembered something.

Three nights before I left, Ryan had stood in our apartment doorway while I packed Lily's clothes.

He'd said, "You think you can just leave with my daughter? You have no idea what I can make happen."

At the time, I'd thought he was trying to frighten me.

Now I wasn't so sure.

Jennifer wrote down the exact words.

Then asked about the other woman.

"What do you know about her?"

"Her name is Vanessa Hale."

Jennifer stopped writing.

Her expression changed.

"Vanessa Hale?"

I nodded.

"Why?"

She turned toward her computer.

"Emily, does she work in finance?"

"I think so."

Jennifer looked up.

"Vanessa Hale is listed as a senior adviser to Meridian Capital."

My stomach dropped.

The company whose statement Ryan had hidden.

May you like

The company connected to the missing millions.

And the woman he'd chosen over his wife.
