Chapter 13 - THE MUSIC BOX THAT HELD THE TRUTH

The threat against Lily changed everything.

I handed the message to Rebecca immediately.

Noah contacted law enforcement.

Sarah was found safe at a neighbor's apartment.

Someone had broken into her home while she was at work.

They'd searched the guest room.

Taken my music box.

And left everything else.

I felt sick.

My mother's final secret was gone.

Or so I thought.

Because when Sarah returned to the apartment, she found something strange beneath the dresser.

A small brass cylinder.

It had apparently fallen from the music box during the break-in.

Inside was a tiny storage device.

I stared at the photograph.

My mother had hidden the evidence in a compartment the intruders hadn't found.

The damaged music box itself had been taken.

But the most important piece remained.

With police assistance, the device was secured and examined by forensic specialists.

The files were encrypted.

But attached instructions included a password hint.

The name of the bird that always came home.

I closed my eyes.

My mother used to tell me a bedtime story about a little bluebird named Hope.

Every winter, Hope flew south.

Every spring, she returned.

No matter how far she traveled.

No matter how dark the sky became.

Hope always found her way home.

I whispered the name.

"Hope."

The investigator entered it.

The archive opened.

Hundreds of files appeared.

Financial records.

Internal emails.

Corporate authorizations.

And a video recording.

My mother's face appeared on the screen.

Younger.

Tired.

But unmistakable.

"Emily," she began, "if you're watching this, I'm sorry I couldn't tell you the truth while I was alive."

I started crying.

She continued.

"Richard Hale and his associates have been moving money through companies they don't fully control. I discovered the transfers while auditing the Whitman Foundation."

She looked down at a folder.

"I reported what I found. When the evidence began disappearing, I made copies."

A long pause followed.

"If anything happens to me, these records should go to investigators."

The video ended.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Noah looked toward Rebecca.

"That's enough to reopen the original investigation."

She nodded.

"And connect it to the current transfers."

I looked at the files.

My mother's quiet courage had survived her death.

For years, she'd hidden the truth to protect me.

Now the evidence she preserved might protect Lily.

The authorities moved quickly.

Richard Hale and several associates were investigated.

Accounts connected to the fraudulent transfers were frozen.

Vanessa Hale's communications were examined.

Ryan's role came under scrutiny.

But the greatest surprise came two days later.

Ryan contacted Jennifer Brooks through his attorney.

He wanted to cooperate.

And he offered something unexpected.

A signed statement admitting that he had forged my authorization.

I stared.

"Why would he do that?"

Jennifer looked at me.

"Because the evidence against him is substantial. His attorney may be advising cooperation."

I nodded slowly.

Then she continued.

"There's another part of his statement."

My stomach tightened.

"What?"

"Ryan says Richard Hale threatened him if he didn't obtain legal control over Lily's trust interests."

I closed my eyes.

So that was it.

The custody fight.

The false accusations.

The desperate messages.
