Chapter 7 - THE LITTLE GIRL WHO INHERITED A FORTUNE

Lily was nine months old.

She couldn't walk.

She couldn't speak.

She thought dropping toys from her high chair was the funniest thing in the world.

And according to the trust documents, she might already own a share of assets worth millions.

I stared at Noah.

"This has to be a mistake."

He shook his head.

"The original trust was created by Ryan's grandfather. His mother later amended it to protect future descendants."

I looked toward Lily.

"Why didn't anyone tell me?"

"We don't know."

I thought about Ryan's behavior.

The locks.

The frozen household account.

The false allegation that I'd taken Lily unlawfully.

And suddenly I understood why he was so desperate to bring her back.

It wasn't necessarily because he missed her.

It might be because he needed access to her legal interests.

The thought made me sick.

Rebecca explained that the trust documents would need independent review.

I nodded.

But one question wouldn't leave me alone.

"Could Ryan have used Lily's identity?"

Noah looked grim.

"That's one of the possibilities under investigation."

My stomach twisted.

"She's a baby."

His expression softened.

"I know."

I looked down at her.

She smiled at me.

A wide, gummy smile.

The kind that made every terrible day feel survivable.

I picked her up.

"No one gets to use you like that," I whispered.

That afternoon, Jennifer filed emergency legal requests related to custody and financial protections.

She coordinated with Texas counsel.

She also helped me establish independent access to my personal records so Ryan couldn't continue controlling information through accounts he managed.

For the first time since leaving Austin, I began to feel like I was regaining control.

Then Ryan called.

I didn't answer.

He called again.

Then again.

Finally, a message appeared.

Emily, please. Vanessa lied to me.

I stared.

A second message.

I didn't know what she was doing.

Then another.

I need to explain before it's too late.

I showed Jennifer.

She advised me not to engage without a clear legal strategy.

But the message bothered me.

Ryan rarely apologized.

And he'd never blamed Vanessa before.

Then Sarah entered the room holding her phone.

"Emily, have you seen this?"

She turned the screen toward me.

A financial news alert filled the display.

MERIDIAN CAPITAL EXECUTIVE QUESTIONED IN MULTIMILLION-DOLLAR FRAUD INVESTIGATION.

Below the headline was a photograph.

Vanessa Hale.

Standing beside a man I didn't recognize.

Sarah pointed.

"That man is her father."

I frowned.

"Who is he?"

Noah, who had just arrived for a scheduled meeting with the attorneys, glanced at the screen.

His expression changed.

"That's Richard Hale."

I looked at him.

"Who?"

Noah's jaw tightened.

"My former business partner."

The room went silent.

Then he said the words that made my skin turn cold.

"He's the reason I stopped trusting people with my company's money."
