Chapter 2 - THE STRANGER IN THE FOYER

The stranger wore a charcoal coat, polished shoes, and the expression of a man who had spent years preparing for a conversation he never wanted to have.

He was in his early sixties, with silver hair and a thin scar cutting through his left eyebrow.

Carmine descended the staircase without hurrying.

"You're looking for my maid?"

"I'm looking for Nell Fontaine."

The name landed between them like a loaded weapon.

Carmine stopped on the final step.

"That isn't her name."

"It was before she started running."

The stranger held out the photograph.

Carmine recognized his father immediately. Beside him stood Emmett Fontaine, a younger man with dark hair, holding a bottle of champagne. Three people stood behind them, their faces partially obscured by shadows.

One was the stranger.

The other was a woman Carmine had seen only in childhood photographs.

His mother.

"What does this have to do with Nell?" Carmine asked.

"Everything."

The stranger introduced himself as Victor Moreau, a retired accountant who had once managed the financial records for Fontaine's Bakery.

He claimed the bakery had been more than a family business. Emmett had secretly developed a recipe collection and a chain of specialty food shops that eventually became worth millions.

But the money had disappeared shortly before the fire.

"Your father helped Emmett protect it," Victor explained. "They created a trust for his daughter."

"His daughter?"

"Nell."

Carmine's expression hardened.

"You're telling me the woman who cleans my floors is the heir to a fortune?"

"I'm telling you she has been living under a false name because someone wants that fortune buried forever."

Carmine studied the photograph.

"Why come to me?"

Victor's gaze shifted toward the staircase.

"Because your father promised Emmett that if the girl ever came to the Orsini estate, she'd be safe."

Before Carmine could respond, a crash sounded from the kitchen.

Benny rushed into the foyer.

"Boss! Nell's gone."

Carmine turned sharply.

Her cleaning cart stood abandoned beside the servants' entrance. Her apron lay on the floor, and the small room where she kept her belongings had been emptied.

On the counter sat a folded note.

Carmine opened it.

I'm sorry. If you discover who I really am, they'll kill you too.
