Chapter 11 - THE NIGHT THE MANSION WENT DARK

The first warning came at 11:36 p.m.
Every exterior light at the Orsini estate went dark.
Then the security alarm sounded.
Benny rushed into Carmine's study.
"Someone cut the backup line."
Carmine stood immediately.
"Where's Nell?"
"Upstairs."
He reached the second-floor hallway just as Nell emerged from her room, clutching the small box containing her mother's letters.
A crash echoed from the ground floor.
Someone had entered the mansion.
Carmine ordered the staff into the secure interior rooms while Benny coordinated with emergency services. He refused to let anyone pursue the intruders blindly through the dark.
Nell stood beside him, pale but determined.
"They came for the ledger."
"They won't get it."
"What if they take me instead?"
Carmine looked directly at her.
"Then they will have to face the consequences of trying."
He guided her toward the reinforced office, where the original records had been secured.
A shadow moved across the doorway.
Carmine pulled Nell back just as a man rushed past the entrance.
Benny's team intercepted him before he reached the staircase.
Two other intruders were detained outside by responding officers.
The confrontation lasted only minutes, but it changed everything.
One of the men carried a photograph of Nell leaving the care facility.
Another had a copy of the trust agreement.
They had not arrived by chance.
Someone had been watching her movements.
When the police secured the property, Carmine discovered that the intruders had ignored the jewelry, the cash, and the expensive artwork.
They had gone straight to the room where the documents were kept.
Their target had never been the mansion.
It was the inheritance.
Nell sat on the office sofa, trembling.
Carmine knelt in front of her.
"Look at me. You're safe."
She tried to answer, but the words caught in her throat.
He took her hand.
For the first time, she didn't pull away.
"I'm tired of running," she whispered.
"Then you won't have to run alone."
She searched his face.
"Is that a promise?"
"It's a promise that I'll stand beside you. Not own you. Not decide your future. Just stand beside you."
Nell's eyes filled with tears.
Before she could answer, Benny entered with a phone recovered from one of the intruders.
