Chapter 10 - THE BETRAYAL THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

Nell felt the room tilt.
Victor had claimed he wanted to protect her inheritance, yet someone had used her identity to attempt a massive withdrawal.
Carmine read the document carefully.
"This is a forgery."
The attorney nodded.
"The signature does not match the authenticated samples. We have already notified the bank's fraud department and suspended the request."
"Can you trace who submitted it?" Nell asked.
"We're working with the appropriate investigators. The submission originated through a legal representative whose identity is being verified."
Carmine immediately wanted to find Victor.
But Nell placed a hand on his arm.
"Not by sending people to frighten him. If he's involved, I want evidence that will hold up in court."
Carmine looked at her for a long moment.
Then he nodded.
It was a small decision, but it marked a change in him.
For years, he had relied on fear to solve problems. Nell was teaching him that fear could silence a person without ever revealing the truth.
The bank preserved the withdrawal records, and the trust's attorneys began an independent review.
Meanwhile, Victor sent Nell a message requesting a meeting.
He claimed he could explain the forged request and identify the person who had submitted it.
Nell agreed to meet him in a public restaurant, with Carmine nearby.
Victor arrived looking exhausted.
He admitted that he had concealed parts of the past. He had invested in the bakery, helped establish the trust, and later accepted money from Silas Voss to keep quiet about the stolen funds.
He had not started the fire, he insisted.
But he had known Silas was planning something dangerous and had chosen to protect himself rather than warn Emmett's family.
"I was a coward," Victor said.
Nell's eyes filled with tears.
"You let me grow up believing my mother died because of an accident."
"I thought telling you would put you in greater danger."
"You didn't protect me. You protected yourself."
Victor lowered his head.
He provided investigators with correspondence showing that Silas had continued pressuring him for years. He also identified the lawyer who had submitted the fraudulent withdrawal request.
The lawyer had worked for a company linked to Silas.
But Victor had one final confession.
Silas wasn't dead.
May you like
He had been living under another identity, waiting for Nell to inherit the fortune.
And he had learned where she was.
