Chapter 9 - SOFIA RUSSO KNEW WHY HER SON BECAME A MONSTER

Damian wanted to go to Newark with twenty armed men.

I said no.

He looked at me like nobody had used that word in years.

“Penny.”

“You storm a terminal and your mother becomes collateral.”

“He has her.”

“I understand English.”

“This is family.”

“So am I.”

That stopped him.

Good.

We used the ledger instead.

Bradley’s model—my model—identified which shell companies paid Alessandro’s security force.

Freeze payment chains.

Freeze fuel cards.

Freeze contractor access.

Cut his power without firing a shot.

Damian watched me work.

“You still know how to do this?”

“I built it.”

“Yes.”

A small smile.

Then serious again.

Within two hours, three of Alessandro’s security contractors walked away when their accounts froze.

Men loyal to money are wonderfully predictable.

Then Sofia called.

Video.

She sat inside a container office, wrists bound.

Alessandro stood behind her.

“You look well, Mother.”

She glared.

“You look stupid.”

I liked her immediately.

Damian stepped toward the screen.

“Mom.”

Her face softened.

“Damian.”

Then:

“Don’t come here.”

Alessandro laughed.

“She always preferred you.”

Sofia looked at him.

“No.”

That silenced everyone.

“I feared you.”

His smile vanished.

“You were angry from childhood, Alessandro. Your father rewarded it because he thought rage looked like strength.”

She looked at Damian.

“And I made the opposite mistake with you.”

“What?”

“I taught you silence was strength.”

Damian’s jaw tightened.

That explained too much.

Then Sofia looked at me through the camera.

“Penelope?”

“Yes.”

“Has he told you everything?”

Damian closed his eyes.

Wonderful.

“What now?”

Sofia answered for him.

“Ask about your father’s final night.”

I stared.

“We already covered that.”

“No.”

Apparently not.

“Damian arrived before Henry collapsed.”

I turned toward my husband.

His face changed.

“Explain.”

Alessandro smiled.

“Oh, this is better than ransom.”

Damian spoke slowly.

“Your father called me before the men reached him.”

“What did he say?”

“He knew Bradley had given up the address.”

Bradley looked down.

“Then?”

“He asked me to take the ledger.”

“You said you never found it.”

“I didn’t.”

“Then what?”

Damian’s voice broke slightly.

“He asked me to promise something.”

“What?”

“If Henry died, I was to make sure you never learned about Russo ownership.”

My chest tightened.

“Why?”

“Because he wanted you free.”

That hurt.

My father hid truth to keep me safe.

Damian honored him by doing the same.

Both wrong.

Both loving me.

Both deciding for me.

“Anything else?”

Damian looked directly at me.

“Yes.”

“Say it.”

“He knew I had seen you before.”

“What?”

“At Columbia.”

My pulse stopped.

Damian had once seen me years before the museum.

One afternoon when he met my father secretly.

I had walked across campus.

Bradley beside me.

Laughing at something.

“Dad knew you noticed me?”

“Yes.”

“What did he say?”

Damian swallowed.

“Stay away from my daughter.”

Even now, I almost laughed.

“That tracks.”

Then Sofia said:

“Henry changed his mind before he died.”

I looked at the screen.

“What?”

“He told me.”

She had spoken to my father?

“Henry called me that night too.”

And his final words about Damian were:

“If he ever becomes brave enough to tell her the truth, maybe he deserves to know her.”

I stared at Damian.

Then Alessandro cut the video.

One final message appeared.

MIDNIGHT.

BRING PENELOPE’S SHARE AUTHORIZATION.

OR SOFIA DIES.

Damian looked at me.

“No.”

May you like

I looked back.

“This time, we decide together.”
