Chapter 8 - BRADLEY FINALLY DID ONE DECENT THING

Bradley handed me the drive.
Not Damian.
Me.
“I copied everything.”
Alessandro looked at him with pure disgust.
“You little thief.”
Bradley laughed shakily.
“I learned from successful men.”
Then the lights went out.
Chaos.
I heard Damian shout my name.
Hands grabbed me.
I drove my elbow backward.
Someone cursed.
Then emergency lights came on.
Alessandro was gone.
So was one of his men.
Bradley remained.
Bleeding from the mouth.
Damian reached me.
“Are you hurt?”
“No.”
“Penny—”
“I said no.”
He checked anyway without touching.
Good.
Federal agents entered minutes later.
Rebecca Shaw? Different story. Don't reuse maybe use Agent Melissa Grant. Let's introduce Agent Claire Donovan.
Agent Claire Donovan took the drive.
The ledger contained enough to expose decades of hidden companies.
But one folder was encrypted.
My model could open it.
I stared at Bradley.
“You did that.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because nobody else understood the structure.”
He still sounded proud.
Some diseases survive consequences.
“What’s inside?”
“Ownership chain.”
“Of what?”
“Russo Maritime.”
Damian frowned.
“My ownership is public.”
“Not the original company.”
Bradley explained.
Thirty years earlier, Damian’s father created a holding entity called R-17.
It owned the founding shares.
After his death, everyone assumed those shares transferred to Damian.
They did not.
The encrypted ledger suggested someone else inherited them.
“Alessandro?”
Bradley shook his head.
“Penelope.”
I laughed.
“No.”
Damian looked equally confused.
“How?”
“My father.”
Henry Hayes apparently received the R-17 shares temporarily while protecting them from Carlo’s theft.
Then he created a trust.
Beneficiary:
His daughter.
Me.
I owned a hidden block of original Russo shares before I ever met Damian.
“That’s impossible.”
Bradley looked at me.
“Your father thought the safest owner was someone outside the family.”
I looked at Damian.
“My father controlled your company?”
“Part of it.”
“You married me without knowing?”
“Yes.”
Good.
At least one coincidence survived.
Then Agent Donovan unlocked another file.
A letter from Damian’s father, Vittorio Russo.
To Henry.
If Alessandro returns, never allow either son to control everything alone.
Interesting parenting.
The shares were designed as a check.
Not an inheritance prize.
Then a second letter.
For Penelope, if she ever becomes involved.
I opened it.
Your father believes you will become a lawyer. I think he is overly optimistic.
I laughed.
Dad and Vittorio apparently argued.
But the letter continued:
If you are reading this, men have probably made your life unnecessarily complicated.
Accurate.
Do not give either Russo brother what he demands.
Make them prove what deserves to survive.
I looked at Damian.
He did not look offended.
He looked thoughtful.
Then Agent Donovan’s phone rang.
Her expression changed.
“What?”
She ended the call.
“Alessandro just took over a Russo container terminal in Newark.”
Damian stood.
“How?”
“Private security switched allegiance.”
Then another alert.
The terminal’s automated systems were locked.
Hundreds of containers.
Millions in cargo.
One vessel unable to leave.
And inside one sealed container, according to Alessandro’s message, was someone Damian loved.
His mother.
May you like
Sofia Russo.
Alessandro had kidnapped his own mother.
