Chapter 10 - I WALKED INTO THE TERMINAL BESIDE MY HUSBAND

We did not bring twenty armed men.

We brought lawyers.

Federal agents.

Port Authority.

Banking injunctions.

And me.

Alessandro expected old-fashioned power.

We arrived with paperwork.

It was almost insulting.

At 11:42 p.m., Damian and I entered the terminal administration building together.

No visible weapons.

My share authorization remained unsigned.

Alessandro waited.

Sofia sat behind him.

Alive.

Angry.

Good.

“You brought your wife.”

Damian answered:

“She brought me.”

I looked at him.

Nice.

Alessandro extended his hand.

“Documents.”

“No.”

His expression hardened.

“You think federal warrants matter here?”

“Yes.”

I placed a folder on the table.

“Especially these.”

Emergency asset freeze.

Court injunction.

Independent receivership over disputed Russo Maritime shares.

Alessandro laughed.

“You froze Damian’s company?”

“Our company.”

Damian looked almost proud.

“If neither of you can control it,” I continued, “you have nothing to seize tonight.”

His smile disappeared.

I had taken away the prize.

Not won it.

Frozen it.

Sometimes the best move is removing the board.

“You’d destroy billions to prove a point?”

“No.”

“I’d lose billions to keep men from deciding my signature belongs to them.”

Sofia smiled.

Alessandro grabbed her shoulder.

Damian moved.

I touched his hand.

Wait.

Then Bradley entered behind federal agents.

Alessandro stared.

“You.”

Bradley carried the original ledger.

Why?

Because prosecutors offered him protection in exchange for full cooperation.

Self-interest accidentally producing justice.

I could live with that.

Bradley placed the ledger on the table.

“Your network is finished.”

Alessandro pulled a gun.

Everything exploded.

Agents shouted.

Damian pushed me behind him.

Sofia drove her chair backward into Alessandro’s knees.

He stumbled.

The gun fired into the ceiling.

Damian could have killed him.

I saw it.

A fallen weapon near his hand.

Old instinct in his face.

Instead, he kicked the gun away.

Agents took Alessandro down.

Alive.

That mattered.

Sofia stood after someone cut her restraints.

Then slapped Alessandro across the face.

Not procedurally necessary.

Emotionally understandable.

She turned to Damian.

“You didn’t shoot him.”

“No.”

“Good.”

Then she looked at me.

“Keep her.”

I raised an eyebrow.

“I’m not furniture.”

Sofia smiled.

“Oh, I like you.”

The terminal was secured by 1:18 a.m.

Alessandro arrested.

His network collapsing.

Bradley in federal custody under cooperation agreement.

Damian’s legitimate companies safe but frozen.

We should have felt victorious.

Instead, Agent Donovan approached.

“Mrs. Russo.”

“What?”

“We opened the final ledger section.”

“And?”

“Your father had another beneficiary.”

My stomach tightened.

“Who?”

She looked at Damian.

Then me.

“A child.”

I laughed nervously.

“My father had no other children.”

“No.”

Donovan turned the page toward me.

“The beneficiary is yours.”

I stared.

“I don’t have a child.”

“Not yet.”

The trust document was designed for my future firstborn.

And if I died without children, the hidden Russo shares transferred permanently to a public foundation.

May you like

My father had not built an inheritance.

He had built a fuse that ended family control in one generation.
