Chapter 4 - THE NEW NAME CHARLES GAVE HIS DAUGHTER

Sabrina had not run away.
Charles had helped her disappear.
He admitted it after Adrian threatened to involve federal investigators immediately.
“Why?”
“Because she was being followed.”
“By who?”
“I didn't know then.”
“Do you know now?”
Charles said nothing.
Adrian's expression hardened.
“Yes.”
The follower had been hired through a risk-intelligence firm.
Client:
Dre Strategic Holdings.
One of Charles's entities.
That made no sense.
“You hired the people following her?” Matthias asked.
“No.”
Someone used the company.
Again.
Credentials.
Internal access.
Someone hiding behind the family name.
Charles quietly moved Sabrina into a protected apartment under the name Sarah Dane.
S.D.
The initials on the files.
She continued investigating Hensley from hiding.
Then stopped communicating three months ago.
Charles feared she had been found.
He didn't tell anyone.
Not Matthias.
Not police.
Because Sabrina had discovered something that could trigger federal scrutiny of Dre Holdings.
“What?” I asked.
Charles looked at me.
“The acquisition wasn't the real target.”
Hensley itself was only a vehicle.
Someone planned to use the purchase to transfer toxic liabilities into Dre Holdings while moving Dre's clean assets into separate family vehicles beforehand.
A controlled collapse.
Whoever designed it would profit from Dre failing.
Short positions.
Debt conversion.
Asset purchases.
Then Adrian asked:
“Who benefits most?”
Charles didn't answer.
I did.
“Someone who already has claims against Dre.”
Exactly.
We searched.
One lender stood out.
Vale Capital.
Fiona's family firm.
Every head turned toward her.
She went pale.
“My father.”
Richard Vale.
One of Dre Holdings' largest private lenders.
If Hensley liabilities triggered covenant failures, Vale Capital gained conversion rights over major Dre assets.
Fiona looked sick.
“I didn't know.”
Matthias stared at her.
“Your father knew about Hensley?”
“No.”
“Then why is his debt structured around a Hensley default?”
No answer.
Adrian requested copies of the loan agreement.
Charles hesitated.
That was enough to make me suspicious.
Then the truth.
The loan had been renegotiated four months earlier.
Signed by Matthias.
Except Matthias looked at the signature and immediately said:
“That isn't mine.”
Another forged authorization.
Then Fiona's phone buzzed.
One message.
From her father.
COME HOME NOW. DO NOT SPEAK TO COLE.
She showed us.
Adrian almost smiled.
“That's subtle.”
Then another message arrived.
Unknown number.
Serena.
Your husband did not bring Fiona to the party.
Fiona brought him.
I stared.
What did that mean?
Then:
Check the hotel security footage from New Haven.
May you like
The affair had a witness.
And apparently what happened inside that hotel was even more important than the affair itself.
