Chapter 11 - THE MAN WHO FINALLY GOT CAUGHT

Peter was arrested three days later.

Not in an airport.

Not at a border.

At the Dre estate.

He went back for one thing.

The original trust ledger.

He believed Sabrina still kept it there.

Security caught him in the west corridor—the same place he planted the Christmas relay device.

Full circle.

No gunfight.

No dramatic death.

Handcuffs.

Adrian preferred living defendants.

So did I.

Peter talked.

Immediately.

Self-preservation.

He implicated Richard Vale in loan manipulation.

Daniel in surveillance financing.

Eleanor in unauthorized family monitoring.

Charles in hidden financial losses.

Fiona in evidence sharing.

But Peter alone had escalated into medical incapacitation and physical danger.

Then Charles's losses finally emerged.

He had hidden $310 million in failed private investments.

Not stolen.

Lost.

He feared admitting it would remove him as patriarch.

So he pushed Hensley harder because the deal's projected growth could mask the damage.

Sabrina discovered that.

Eleanor discovered part of it.

Thus her coup.

No one trusted anyone enough to simply say:

We have a problem.

Instead:

Surveillance.

Forgery.

Affairs.

Blackmail.

Corporate sabotage.

A whole family collapsing because admitting failure felt worse than committing worse failures.

Then Matthias faced his own part.

He had ignored red flags.

Used corporate travel for his affair.

Kept Fiona's investigative role secret.

Lied to me.

Dismissed Sabrina's warnings months earlier because Charles called her emotional.

He wasn't criminal.

But he wasn't innocent.

The board placed him on leave.

He did not fight.

That surprised me.

“I deserve review.”

Three weeks earlier he would have burned the building down before saying that.

Then Richard Vale resigned from Vale Capital and entered negotiations with investigators.

Daniel cooperated.

Eleanor stepped down from the family trust.

Charles resigned as chairman.

Sabrina returned to the board only as temporary forensic adviser.

And Fiona?

She resigned completely.

Before leaving, she came to the hospital.

I almost refused to see her.

Then accepted.

She stood beside Claire's incubator.

“She’s beautiful.”

“Yes.”

“I’m sorry.”

“For which part?”

Fiona swallowed.

“All of it.”

Good answer.

I did not forgive her.

Not then.

She did not ask me to.

Then she handed me the necklace.

I stared.

“No.”

“It belongs to you.”

“Absolutely not.”

“It contains the evidence that saved Dre.”

“It also symbolizes my husband's affair.”

Fiona considered.

“Fair.”

We both laughed.

Unexpectedly.

Then she said:

“Sabrina wants you to have the data key.”

I removed the micro-drive.

Gave the necklace back.

“Keep your diamonds.”

Fiona actually smiled.

Then Adrian entered.

My divorce papers were ready.

I had asked him to prepare them before Claire was born.

Matthias had no idea.

May you like

The corporate conspiracy had nearly destroyed his company.

Now he was about to learn it hadn't saved his marriage.
