Chapter 14 - THE FIRST DATE AFTER THE DIVORCE

Three years passed.

Not three weeks.

Not a montage.

Three years.

Claire became a loud, curious little girl who believed every elevator button belonged personally to her.

Matthias became a good father.

Not perfect.

Present.

He took her to preschool.

Learned braids badly.

Sat through pediatric appointments.

Knew her favorite yogurt.

Remembered the name of her stuffed rabbit.

No assistant did those things for him.

Dre Holdings recovered.

Independent board.

Stricter governance.

Sabrina became permanent chief risk officer.

Charles retired completely.

He and Eleanor eventually built something like friendship after divorce.

Richard Vale served his sentence and disappeared from finance.

Daniel rebuilt his life outside leadership.

Fiona's company became successful.

I saw her once at a healthcare conference.

We nodded.

That was enough.

My Bennett Maternal Emergency Fund expanded into a full nonprofit program partnered with hospitals across Connecticut and New York.

I became director while continuing occasional clinical work.

I liked that balance.

Then Matthias asked me to dinner.

Not for Claire.

Not custody.

Not school.

Me.

I said no.

Six months later:

Again.

“No.”

A year after that:

“Coffee?”

I stared at him.

“You downgraded.”

“Strategy.”

I said yes.

Coffee became dinner months later.

No secrecy.

No assumption.

No family involvement.

On our fourth date, Matthias finally discussed Fiona without defending himself.

“I loved attention more than I respected marriage.”

That was the sentence.

Not:

I was lonely.

You were pregnant.

Work was hard.

Fiona understood me.

Just:

I chose wrong.

I appreciated that.

Then he said:

“I don't expect forgiveness to mean reunion.”

Good.

We dated for another year.

Slowly.

Claire knew only that Mommy and Daddy were having dinner.

No promises.

Then Christmas returned.

Five years after the Dre estate party.

Sabrina invited us.

I almost refused.

Then decided the house didn't own the memory.

We went.

No heels.

I was done suffering for formalwear.

The fireplace looked the same.

Tree smaller.

Guest list shorter.

No Peter Vale.

No secret relay.

No threat diagrams.

Matthias entered after me.

Alone.

He saw me across the room.

And stopped.

Then walked directly to me.

No calculation.

He handed me sparkling water.

My preferred kind.

“Remembered?”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

Then a woman entered behind him.

For half a second, my body reacted.

Old memory.

Then I recognized her.

Fiona.

She came with her fiancé.

A woman named Natalie.

I laughed at myself.

Matthias noticed.

“You okay?”

“Yes.”

Actually yes.

That surprised me.

Later, Fiona approached.

She looked toward Matthias.

Then me.

“You two?”

“Dating.”

She nodded.

“Slow learners.”

“Very.”

Then she smiled.

“I'm glad.”

No dramatic sisterhood.

No best friendship.

Just closure.

That night, Matthias did not propose.

Good.

He asked:

“Next Christmas?”

“For?”

“Another date.”

I smiled.

May you like

“Yes.”

For once, nobody needed the future decided immediately.
