Chapter 5 - The Inheritance Nobody Wanted the Children to Find

Adrien Bellandi had spent millions trying to help his children speak.

Now he was discovering that someone had wanted them silent for financial reasons.

The family trust dated back thirty years.

It had been established by Adrien's grandfather using legitimate property and investment assets.

The agreement protected part of the Bellandi estate for future generations.

And when the triplets were born, they became beneficiaries.

Victor couldn't simply seize those assets.

But he could attempt to manipulate the adults legally responsible for them.

Celeste had refused to sign the documents he prepared.

Then she disappeared.

Adrien stared at the trust records.

"Why didn't I know about this?"

His attorney looked uncomfortable.

"Your brother controlled much of the estate administration after your father's death."

Adrien's jaw tightened.

"And I let him."

For years, he'd been busy managing the criminal side of his organization.

He'd delegated the family foundation, property trusts, and household finances to Victor.

He believed his brother was loyal.

Now he knew Victor had used that trust against him.

Meanwhile, Evelyn remained with the children.

She'd taken a temporary leave from the restaurant, but she insisted on clear boundaries.

She wasn't a nanny.

She wasn't a therapist.

And she wouldn't allow Adrien to treat her as another employee he could command.

"I want to help the children," she told him, "but they need qualified support and a sense of choice."

Adrien nodded.

"I understand."

She raised an eyebrow.

"Do you?"

He almost smiled.

"I'm learning."

That afternoon, a child psychologist experienced in trauma-related communication met with the triplets.

The specialist didn't demand that they speak.

She allowed them to play.

Draw.

And communicate through gestures, pictures, and the tapping pattern.

Evelyn remained nearby because the children asked for her.

Slowly, the three began sharing fragments of memory.

Luca drew a house with a red basement door.

Matteo drew a black car.

Sophia drew a woman beside a window.

Then all three added the same figure.

A man wearing a silver watch.

The psychologist looked toward Adrien.

"Does this person resemble anyone the children know?"

Adrien studied the drawing.

His stomach tightened.

Victor wore a silver watch.

But so did many men in his organization.

He didn't want to jump to conclusions.

Then Luca pointed at the figure.

"Uncle Vic."

His voice was quiet.

But clear.

Adrien closed his eyes.

For two years, he'd thought his children were protecting themselves from grief.

Now he understood they had been protecting themselves from someone still living inside their home.

Then Marco entered with another update.

"Boss, investigators found the original trust administrator."

Adrien looked up.

"Who?"

"A woman named Margaret Ellis."

The name meant nothing to him.

Marco continued.

"She handled your grandfather's estate twenty years ago."

"Where is she?"

"At a private care facility outside Boston."

Adrien nodded.

Then Marco hesitated.

"There's more."

"What?"

"Margaret Ellis says Celeste visited her the week before she disappeared."

Adrien went still.

"And?"

Marco swallowed.

"She left a sealed envelope."

"Addressed to whom?"

Marco looked toward Evelyn.

"To Evelyn Hart."

The waitress who had only recently met the Bellandi family.

And who had no idea why a missing woman had written her name two years earlier.
