Chapter 1 - The Waitress Who Heard What Nobody Else Could

The first thing Evelyn Hart noticed was that the three children weren't afraid of their father.

They were afraid of what might happen when he took them home.

Sophia's little fingers tightened around Evelyn's apron.

Luca stared at the silver key on the restaurant floor.

Matteo whispered the same word again.

"Cellar."

Adrien Bellandi stood before them, looking as though the ground had disappeared beneath his feet.

"There's a cellar beneath our house," he said slowly.

Evelyn looked up.

"Does it have a red door?"

His expression changed.

"No."

She studied him.

"Are you certain?"

"My family's owned that estate for forty years."

"That wasn't my question."

One of his bodyguards stiffened.

Nobody questioned Adrien Bellandi.

Nobody except the waitress holding his frightened children.

Adrien looked toward his security chief, Marco DeLuca.

"Marco. Is there a red door beneath my house?"

Marco hesitated.

For one brief second, Evelyn saw genuine alarm cross his face.

Then he answered.

"Not that I know of, boss."

Adrien stared at him.

"Interesting."

Evelyn felt Sophia begin trembling again.

She lowered herself to the little girl's level.

"Sweetheart, can you show me what you mean?"

Sophia glanced at her brothers.

Then tapped Evelyn's wrist.

Three slow taps.

Two quick.

Evelyn repeated the rhythm.

Sophia's breathing steadied.

Then the little girl whispered, "Mommy."

Adrien dropped into a chair.

It was the first time he'd heard his daughter say that word in two years.

"Sophia?"

She didn't look at him.

Instead, she pressed her tiny fingers against Evelyn's palm and whispered:

"Mommy cried."

The room went silent.

Evelyn swallowed.

"Where did Mommy cry?"

Sophia pointed toward the floor.

"Down."

Adrien's jaw tightened.

"At the house?"

The child nodded.

Luca stepped forward.

His voice was barely audible.

"Bad man locked."

Adrien closed his eyes.

For two years, doctors had suggested the triplets' silence might be connected to severe psychological trauma following their mother's disappearance.

He'd refused to believe someone could have frightened three children so completely.

Now he was hearing their first fragmented memories.

And every word pointed toward his own home.

"Who locked the door?" Evelyn asked gently.

Matteo looked toward Marco.

The bodyguard went still.

But the child shook his head.

"Not him."

Adrien exhaled.

Then Luca whispered something else.

"Uncle."

Adrien froze.

He had only one living brother.

Victor Bellandi.

The man who'd taken control of much of the family's business after Celeste disappeared.

Evelyn watched Adrien's expression change.

"Does Uncle Victor have a key?" she asked.

All three children nodded.

Then Sophia lifted her face.

Tears streamed down her cheeks.

"Mommy still there."

Adrien stopped breathing.

Evelyn looked at him.

The most feared man on the East Coast suddenly looked like a father who'd forgotten how to stand.

Then his phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

A woman's voice whispered:

"Adrien?"

His face went white.

Because the voice belonged to Celeste Bellandi.

His missing wife.

And her first words were:

"Don't bring the children back to the house."
