Chapter 13 - THE BIRTHDAY THEY TRIED TO STEAL

At 11:43 p.m., police surrounded the abandoned Belandi warehouse.

Inside, Helena stood beside a folding table covered with legal documents.

Samuel Price paced nervously near the entrance.

The triplets sat on a narrow couch, huddled beneath a blanket.

Lily held Noah's hand.

Oliver stared at the wall clock.

Helena checked her watch.

“Seventeen minutes.”

Samuel swallowed.

“Once the guardianship papers are filed, the trust transfers into our control.”

Helena smiled.

“Exactly.”

“But Adrien will challenge it.”

“Not if he's declared unfit.”

Samuel looked toward the children.

“And what about them?”

Helena's expression was cold.

“They'll be placed somewhere private.”

Lily began trembling.

Oliver squeezed her hand.

“Don't,” he whispered.

Helena turned sharply.

“What did you say?”

Oliver lowered his eyes.

But Noah suddenly spoke.

“We want Daddy.”

Helena froze.

For two years, the children had remained silent around her.

Now they were speaking.

And she understood that her control was slipping away.

“Be quiet,” she snapped.

Lily stood.

“No.”

Helena approached.

“Sit down.”

Lily backed away.

Then a loud voice came through the warehouse's exterior speaker.

“This is the police. The building is surrounded. Release the children and come outside with your hands visible.”

Samuel went pale.

Helena grabbed his arm.

“You said the phones couldn't be traced!”

He shook his head.

“I don't understand.”

But Evelyn understood.

The photograph hadn't merely shown where the children were.

It had shown the painted warehouse identification number.

Combined with the visible interior details, investigators had identified the exact storage unit.

The triplets had helped the police find them.

Inside, Helena looked toward a side exit.

She reached for Lily.

But the little girl stepped back.

“Don't touch me!”

Her voice echoed through the warehouse.

Then Noah and Oliver moved beside her.

Three small children standing together.

No longer silent.

No longer alone.

Police entered through the rear access corridor.

“Hands where we can see them!”

Samuel surrendered immediately.

Helena tried to run.

But officers intercepted her at the loading dock.

Minutes later, Adrien rushed through the warehouse doors after investigators declared the scene secure.

“Daddy!”

Three voices cried out together.

The triplets ran into his arms.

He dropped to his knees and held them tightly.

Evelyn stood nearby, crying with relief.

Then Lily looked up.

“Daddy?”

“Yes, sweetheart?”

“Grandma said Mommy was bad.”

Adrien brushed a tear from her cheek.

“She lied.”

Lily nodded.

Then she pointed toward Samuel's abandoned briefcase.

“Mommy said there's a book.”

Adrien looked toward the folder lying inside.

Detective Hayes opened it.

There was a blue ledger.

And inside that ledger was a list of names.

At the very top was one Evelyn had never expected to see.

May you like

DANIEL MARLOWE.

Her father.
