Chapter 11 - THE MOTHER WHO WAITED TWENTY YEARS

Evelyn had spent twenty years believing she was an orphan.
Twenty years imagining the parents she barely remembered.
Twenty years telling herself that grief was easier when you stopped asking questions.
Now Celeste Belandi was looking at her with tears in her eyes.
“Grace is alive.”
Evelyn stared.
“Where?”
Celeste swallowed.
“She's been hiding.”
“From whom?”
“Vittorio's old associates. The people who continued running the foundation after his death.”
Evelyn's voice broke.
“Why didn't she come for me?”
Celeste squeezed her hand.
“Because they told her you were dead.”
The words struck harder than anything Evelyn had heard that night.
Her mother believed she was dead.
Just as Evelyn believed her mother was dead.
Two lives stolen by the same lie.
“Where is she?” Evelyn whispered.
Celeste closed her eyes.
“There's a woman named Sister Agnes. She runs a shelter near Albany. Grace has been helping her for years.”
Detective Hayes immediately began verifying the information.
By evening, officers had located a woman using the name Grace Ellis.
She was fifty-three.
She worked in a community kitchen.
And when shown a recent photograph of Evelyn, she collapsed into tears.
An officer arranged a secure video call.
Evelyn sat trembling beside Adrien.
The screen flickered.
A woman appeared.
Silver threaded through her dark hair.
Her eyes were unmistakably familiar.
“Evelyn?”
The young waitress covered her mouth.
“Mom?”
Grace began crying.
“My baby.”
Evelyn couldn't speak.
For years, she'd imagined what she would say if she could see her mother one more time.
Now every sentence disappeared.
Finally, she whispered:
“I thought you were gone.”
Grace shook her head.
“I looked for you every day.”
They cried together.
And for the first time, Evelyn understood that the emptiness she'd carried for twenty years had never meant she was unloved.
Before the call ended, Grace leaned toward the camera.
“Sweetheart, there's something you need to know.”
Evelyn wiped her eyes.
“What?”
“Your father left evidence behind before they took him.”
Evelyn froze.
“Evidence of what?”
Grace hesitated.
“Of the person who ordered everything.”
“Matteo?”
“No.”
Grace looked terrified.
“Victor wasn't the leader either.”
Then she whispered the name.
“Helena Belandi.”
Adrien stood abruptly.
Because Helena Belandi was his father's widow.
