Chapter 8 - The Lioness Wakes

The tension in the backyard was so incredibly thick that it felt like drawing breath was a difficult task.
The scene mirrored the dramatic capture of image_560320.jpg perfectly, freezing time in a portrait of raw family conflict.
Leo remained on his knees, his curly hair falling into his tear-stained, devastated face.
Mark, wearing his green shirt, glared aggressively downward, unaware of the massive mistake he had just made.
Sarah stood directly behind Leo, her purple blouse fluttering slightly in the warm summer breeze.
Her expression was a masterclass in cold, calculating, and unyielding rage.
"Step away from my son, Mark," Sarah commanded, her voice dangerously quiet but echoing like thunder across the silent yard.
Mark blinked in surprise, momentarily taken aback by the terrifying intensity in his sister's eyes.
"I am just teaching the boy some basic manners, Sarah," Mark scoffed, trying to maintain his facade of authority.
"He is incredibly disrespectful and needs a firm hand to keep him in line."
"The only thing you are teaching him is how to be a miserable, abusive coward," Sarah replied, taking one protective step forward.
The grandparents gasped softly in the background, watching their children clash in a spectacular fashion.
"Excuse me?" Mark said, his face flushing dark red with sudden anger and embarrassment.
"You heard exactly what I said," Sarah continued, her voice rising in volume so every single guest could hear the undeniable truth.
"I heard you threaten him in the hallway, Mark."
"I saw the bruises on his arm and the burn on his hand."
"I know exactly what kind of monster you turn into the second I walk out of the front door."
Mark took a defensive step backward, his eyes darting nervously toward their parents.
"You are crazy, Sarah, he is making up lies to get sympathy!" Mark shouted, pointing a shaking finger at Leo.
"Leo has not said a single word against you, because you terrified him into absolute silence!" Sarah roared, her maternal fury finally exploding.
"You pushed him down, you spilled his food, and you told my beautiful, perfect son that he was a burden to me!"
She knelt down gracefully, placing her warm, loving hands gently on Leo's trembling shoulders.
"Look at me, Leo," she whispered softly to her son, her voice cracking with deep emotion.
Leo slowly lifted his tearful eyes, looking back at his mother's fiercely protective face.
"You are my entire world, and you are the greatest gift I have ever received," Sarah told him loudly, ensuring Mark heard every word.
"And no one, absolutely no one, will ever make you feel worthless in your own home again."
